Weekend #1 of project S2...

Well, this weekend was my first chance to spend any time working on the S2, so I got a few little jobs done & gave her a good check over.

The screenwash leakage scare has now been sorted - removed the under tray & found the top of the plastic drain cap had sheared off. Cleaned that up & glued it back together, so fingers crossed, that will be fixed.

Took apart the passenger door card to investigate the non-functioning central-locking. After a good half an hour finding every screw to remove the door card (these Porsches certainly are well put together!), I found the actuator arm had simply popped off the locking rod! A simple fix, but another half hour to put it all back together again!

Friday I paid a visit to the bodyshop who are going to sort the rust repairs to the arch bottoms for me, & had a good look around at the dreaded brown stuff! Thankfully, the sills are v solid, but all 4 arch bottoms need some rust removal/repair. Nothing too major, apart from the drivers front arch, which the bodyshop guys & I reckon will be simpler just to replace, (so I'm on the lookout for a rot-free S2 OSF wing... anyone?). I was really impressed with the bodyshop I'm using, I've had work done by them before, but hadn't realised they do quite a lot of classic restoration work. They were really enthusiastic about doing my S2, one of the guys used to own an S2 Cab, but unfortunately due to a total restoration of an MG underway at the moment it's going to be May before they can do mine [:(]. Oh, well, I guess it's worth waiting for someone I trust to do a good job.

It's booked in next week at Strasse in Leeds for servicing & belts doing & a thorough check over, so I'll keep you posted on what mechanical ailments may or may not come to light!

Let the project commence!

Cheers,
Robbo

You'll be lucky! All the best in finding one, but those wings were only fitted to S2's and Turbos, and were all prone to rust, and are a pig to remove, and are always in demand second-hand ....

A good, solid new one may be a better bet. Garunteed straight and rust-free.

Oli.

That's good news on the sills - It should look great when those wings are sorted

You may struggle to find a good s/h wing though - it might make more sense to buy new. Try Porsche Centre Exeter for the best price on spares - ask for "forum" discount

Otherwise it's the usual suspects - Porschapart, Douglas Valley, PH sportscars etc..

With the rest of the car being so good it must be worth paying a bit extra for a new wing? Of course, it's not my money at stake! [&:]

Sounds like a good weekend Robbo.

That plastic actuator arm may well pop off again at some point. Both of my cars have had it happen multiple times and in the end I just bought a new part from Porsche. The part number is stamped on it and they are just over a quid IIRC. Buy two - it saves wasting time taking the door card off every time it comes loose. There are some old posts on here with the number detailed.

Douglas Valley promised me a completely 100% rot free wing for my repair, but when it turned up at the bodyshop it was flaky and brown [] Don't hold your breath to find a good S/H one, a new one is just under £400 from Chris at Exeter Porsche if you mention the forum, and it should last another 20 years.

Or more, as you will rustproof it. And every year take the liner out, clear the crud that's accumulated behind the liner and renew the rustproofing.

Guaranteed for life! [8|]

I'm pretty sure the bodyshop could repair it if it came to it, but it would be better to put a new one on if possible.

Alpine - I'm using a little place called Imperial on Bradford Road, they've been around for donkeys years & do all sorts of bodywork from insurance repairs to full on resto jobs, like the MG they're doing at the moment. They did a great job on my FTO, so I trust them to sort the S2, it just means I have to wait until May [:(]

We'll have to get together some time, the only other 944 I've seen around Dewsbury is an older white one, D reg I think.

Cheers,
Robbo
