Hi All :)

This weeks poll is...

Ignoring what you already drive....would you PREFER.....Auto or Manual gearbox ?
Multiple choices allowed...

All the best Brett :)

All my life I have owned manual sports cars but for the first time I have just bought an auto (mainly because a manual wasn't available ). I find I am really appreciating not having to stir a gear box all the time for a change. Driving just feels so much more relaxed and with so much power on tap I don't think I need a manual . Mind you when I was a callous youth it was pedal to the metal everywhere and I wouldn't have given the time of day to an auto[;)]

I remember way back when the 928 was new.
Autocar had tested a manual and didn't like it. A few months later they tested an Auto and said that the car was much better that way.
If I recall, they couldn't explain exactly why, but said the car was more "complete" and the auto box suited the powerful engine much better.

Before all the S4 owners lynch me - this was Autocar's comment, on the original 928 [;)]

Hi Peanut :)

Yes the auto box is VERY good on 928s,,if you want to improve it for a snappier kickdown...fit a "kickdown" switch...it makes the box truly amazing :)

All the best Brett :)

Hi Brett. I daren't fit a kick down. My poor auto box is a bit elderly and probably will need rebuilding very soon. It takes it 5 minutes warm up before it stops slipping!

Hi Peanut..

Ummm thats usually a sign of LOW fluid....928s have a very weird way of testing the level....it HAS to be done in a very precise way....look it up on RENNLIST and try it..when i first got my S2 it did that....I topped up the gearbox fluid....(about half a litre lol) and its fine now :)

Hope this helps Brett :)

Thanks Brett
thats the first job my local garage have got on their list right after they replace my steering rack groan.
I hope the gearbox improves as its very embarrasing pulling away with about 3000rpm ahem

I was an anti auto person until I got the GTS. With so much power and torque it really makes for very relaxed driving. Well, at least until you suddenly realise all that power and torque has put you over the limit!! I tend to use mine for longer journeys, and it is really good for that, a true grand touring motor car.

I bought the car near Manchester and drove it back to Aberdeen, the weather was very bad, heavy rain most of the way, not really what you want in an unfamiliar high power car. However I have to admit that it was one of the most relaxing long distance drives I have ever done. I was not going fast but the time and miles seemed to pass very quickly. As a matter of interest the flight down in the BM pocket rocket cost me £125 and fuel back cost me £75 and probably caused much less pollution, so don't fly, use your 928! I am off to the le Mans Classic in July which will give me a good opportunity for some more grand touring.

In this car and being used for its true function, I would say auto box every time. They are just about bomb proof and will probably outlast the rest of the car.
