Weeping gaskets

I've known that the rhs cam cover gasket is weeping for some time but have been advised (indie) that it's now been joined by the timing chain cover gasket. I get no oil on the floor but do smell some burning off the exhaust on start up.
I looked at Rennlist forum and drew the conclusion that such minor deterioration of the gaskets was not worth sorting until they drip on the floor.
As usual be interested to learn of others thoughts?
Mileage is 67k. Indy advised day and half with bumper off and engine drop.
May be see some of you later this week at le mans

Assuming you have your engine undertray intact, oil is likely to accumulate on the upper side for some time to and you probably won't actually notice any oil on your drive or garage floor. Once the upper cam-cover gasket starts to weep it may well drip onto the hot exhaust and give you that tell-tale hot whiff of oil. So, unless you are having to regularly top up with oil (in which case it would have to be pretty much pouring out) then it's not necessarily an urgent job. I think most owners see the gasket replacement as part of routine maintenance so get it done anyway - it's not horrendously expensive at an indie.

Although both upper and lower cam cover gaskets leak, the lower two are the ones that most oil comes out of as oil sits against them over night but drains away from the upper ones. Lower ones are easy to replace from below without any issues and no need to remove the engine.

The rubber seals on the timing chain cover go hard over time and allow oil to weep past. Most can be replaced one at a time without disturbing anything else, you may not get all the leaky seals due to limited access but they can be reduced to a minimum until such time as you need to get the engine out for something else.

Second Clydes comments........may be just the lowers....pretty easy job and cheapest parts ever for a Porsche --- I think the gaskets are around £3.00 a side !!!
