Chaps,
A quickie.
I drove my S2 back from North Wales last Friday, having spent a week there (Frontrunner was attended en route from London to Pwillheli.)
For a number of reasons, we ended up driving the car back with significantly more load then on the way there. We picked up a passenger, and a fair quantity more luggage. This means that the car came back with 3 adults on board and a boot full of heavy luggage.
The 'old girl did very well, and didn't miss a beat (and those Snowdonia roads take some bettering!), but what I did notice was that the car handled really quite differently. I am used to accomodating for extra weight in cars, but the difference here was substantial.
Interestingly, it wasn't felt so much on twisty roads, but much more on fast straight roads. Normally the car feels very very stable; this time it felt wallowy and floaty and very imprecise. To the extent that I really thought that something was wrong, and was considering what it could be and how to go about fixing it. The rear suspension was making some minor 'clonks' as well - possibly nothing more than thumping over bumps, but noticably more than usual. (The car had a suspension rebuild about 10 months ago, with new ARB bushes, and a full alignment about 8 months ago.)
Now we are home, have unpacked, the car is the normal weight and back to normal handling. So it can only have been a result of the weight.
So ... the question. Has anyone else experienced a dramatic change in handling characteristics as a result of loading? Particularly at high speed?
Oh, and another thing. I did a hard stop on the motorway on the way back as well - 90mph to a standstill, about as quick as I possibly could (ABS didn't cut in tho'). And the brakes felt ... not too crisp towards the end of the deceleration. I thought the S2 brakes were meant to be good when in good condition (which mine are in, I think .... )
Oli.
