copy of post i put on 964 rs forum in thread on weight.
"A pal of mine has just renovated a Japanese 911 sc (1980). Stunning 30,000 mile car bought as a non runner. Silver with Pascha trim.

He's taken off the a/c, fuel injection, blowers etc and put it on PMO's.

Scarily it weighs with fuel 1080 kgs, and it was weighed again as it seemed to light!

I say scarily because a 2.7 rs touring is allegedly 1075 kg .

Now my thought is given Lee's car has been well set up, with fresh bilsteins where is the difference in drive to a 2.7 rs? Ok I can see hat there is a potential balance issue with the magnesium carankcase but that may be dealt with by pmos instead of injection?

The fun bit is it cost all in £10k and is mint and entirely original and rust free. 2.7rs for £150k anyone... "

Reason i thought interesting was that RSness is about the drive. Now to me given the ease with which Lee has hit 2.7rs weight and the fact (body aside) not many 2.7rs mecahical bits too different RS reps should be easy to get to drive like 2.7rs...

Now to do that to a 964 to make it like RS is harder as you need to seam weld, hence good replicas being quite dear and to do to a 993 even more cost as there are that many more mechanical bits to do over a 993 (plus body kit , wheels etc)

Where am i going with this?

Well to me you could say 993s being the rarest RS and the most "modified" currently look alot better value that 2.7 RS particularly noting you can create a car that drives like a 2.7 rs so easily.

I have never driven a 2.7 rs , and i am willing to be shot down if someone can explain why it should drive differently to Lee's.



 
I think I got the gist of your post? You really notice the lack of weight in a 2.7RS, but the engine has a different power delivery to a 3.0sc....it is far more "cammy" and begs to be driven...obviously your friend may prefer the way his SC drives?...What you cannot add to these wannabes and replicas is the RS factor which can only come from the factory,,by that I mean driving a real RS is an event, compared to driving, just a good car. Values aside a 2.7RS is about the only other Porsche I would like to own, down to the way it drives.
 
Sorry tricky point to get across! Again not felt how a 2.7 feels, but Lee has put his car on PMOs which help. In a rebuild not hard to make the 3.0 say feel like a 2.7 in "camminess terms". Bottom line is ignoring the "event" are they really that different to this type of REP? Clearly a 993rs will be as to make a std 993 into a 993 rs rep needs lots of dear bits!
 
With the advances in technology, engine building, suspension, tyres, etc...it is certainly possible to make a better car (technically) than a 2.7RS.....look at the green monster Chris Harris built, the intention with that car was to perform way beyond 2.7RS specs. I thought i was with it until you said not hard to make a 3.0 like a 2.7 in terms of caminess,,, it all costs money,it is difficult to guage how extensively your friend has modified his car, a regular SC is nowhere near!,,,,,,apart from the differences they are just the same!? [:D]

Paul, I disagree. I can build a car that will feel exactly like a 2.7RS in every way: same engine, suspension, brakes. Everything. What I cannot add is the label. This car would cost at least £50K to build a nice one, depending what car I start with. I can do the same with a 993 C2 to make an RS but it will cost a lot more due to the number of unique RS parts, which I guess makes the real 993RS a good deal! It would be very difficult to make an SC motor feel like a responsive 2.7 MFI motor, for a start it would have to come on the cam at 5000 rpm and rev to 7300 rpm. I will know fairly soon as I am building a 3.0 MFI motor at the moment.....
 
Nick, that is the point...it wouldn't be the same...in terms of event!...The realisation and kudos of driving possibly the best 911 ever made, a true homologation factory car,,,the car that set the ball rolling for future RS variants..... Nick, I am sure you could build a better car than they could on a production line in 1972,,,,but these things are more than the sum of their parts, which is part of the attraction.
