Weird headlight thing going on!

In the past when i have been doing anything that required the headlights to be raised rather than have the headlights up from the switch i have manually raised them by twisting the control knob under the bonnet.
At the weekend i did it and after twisting the knob a couple of times and as they started to raise they suddenly went up by themselves and then back down. Tried it a few times and it did it again.
Any ideas why its doing this? It means i have to have them switched on now to get underneath them thus draining the battery or having the engine running in the garage which isnt ideal.

I believe that is how they work, yes... several alternatives - turn the lights on, ignition on, lights go on and up, turn ignition off, lights stay up, but on side lights only. they will go down if you turn the ignition off.

Disconnect the battery, as you suggest, or, disconnect the connector on the side of the headlight lifter motor, and then twiddle into the position you require.

Regards,

Tref.

Oh, btw, I would disconnect them if I were working under them anyway - if they decide to close for some stupid reason, they'll take your fingers off!

Another easy alternative is to remove the headlight motor fuse before winding the headlights up manually.

Fuse 2.

Or turn the on, lights up, remove fuse, turn them off.

(Common practice when changing the oil filter on S2's. And quite possibly other models as well.)

OK, I'm missing out on something here - how does putting the lights up make it easier to change the oil filter?

Tref,

The light raising mechanism gets in the way of access to the oil filter. Raising the lights moves the mechanism and makes filter access easier.

In all the times I've changed oil filters on a 944, I've never noticed that as being in the way - I'll try it next time!

Tref,

I'm genuinely surprised - it was about the first thing that I thought about when I came to changing the oil filter for the first time.

Is the oil filter placement different on S2's I wonder?

I've changed oil and filter numerous times on 2.5 NA, Turbos and the S2, never moved the lights. I use an "end on" three legged oil filter spanner, so I get onto the filter "end on" - maybe that makes the difference.

Funny, I use an end on spanner as well and find the mechanism-moving to be a great help!

(Perhaps you're just odd. Or maybe I'm just odd! [;)] Yes, that's quite likely actually! [:D] )
