Weird Noise, Only Happens In Reverse!

Hi all, haven't posted for a while...that's not to say I've had no problems though! Just been busy and only really got the car out of a very long winter under cover!

Just had the car in for a few jobs including major service, abs warning light (I ran out of ideas on how to solve this one!!) and a to try and diagnose a sinking clutch pedal which turned out to be a failing master cylinder. Also new front disks and CAM chain guides.

The car now has a new problem which I just can't figure out! It makes an odd noise when reversing! It's all good in forward gears, just reverse! Sounds like the dust guards on the brakes to me but a but deeper. I checked them and they all seem good and true. Could it be the drive in any way?!

It's definitely going back but thought I'd ask!!

Interesting that either of these would create the sound going in reverse only. It's silent moving forwards but I guess if it's the broken spring it could be caught in an awkward position.

As I'm in Scotland for the week with the car it'll have to wait until I get back to Sheffield but it doesn't sound too serious to me!

Thanks guys.

I merely suggest it because what you describe matches some symptoms I had (including only making noises in reverse) and that's what the problem was. There may well be other causes of the same sort of noise.

I would second a broken or loose brake shoe spring, catching on the drum at the rear my S2 had exactly the same issue and one of the springs had come loose.
