Well, cabby has gone in today......

My cab went in today for belts, water pump etc, and whilst it was in they looked over the car and I asked to see underneath whilst it was on the ramp. The rear brake hose uj's were corroded, so getting those done as well, along with the pipes. also the CV boot on the rear nearside was was split so that's getting replaced.

So jobs to be done are-

Belts
Rollers
Tensioners
Chains
Slipper pads
Water pump
Rear brake hoses
Front engine gaskets
All fluids & filters
CV boot.

Then 2 new rear tyres ( loads of tread left, but are old, and going to replace the Goodyear's with pirelli p7 cinturato's) then MOT.

Later on in the year, its going into the bodyshop to have all the little dings and scrapes sorted.

A question though, it needs a new rear screen as the plastic has gone very cloudy and has a small split in it. Will it be more cost effective to replace the whole roof as it is 27 year old, or keep the roof and have a new screen bonded in?

I got one done by only changing screen. Was much cheaper and had no issues. Just make sure you pick a good trimmer.

Thanks for the reply Stuart. If you can remember, and you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the screen?

Cheers, Al.

It'll be a hell of a lot cheaper than replacing the entire roof - for which you'll get little or no change from £1k. The clouding can be removed with paint correction fluid (I've made a major difference to mine, which although a 968 is the same roof as a 944 cab) but a split is another matter. Be aware that removal of the roof section to replace the screen takes a few hours - removal and replacement of the roof itself is about 8 hours labour, over and above the cost of the replacement roof.

Mostly I drive the cab roof down, so I was happy to remove most of the clouding with paint correction fluid, but if the split allows water ingress when raining then you have a different problem.

Thanks Chris. There is a trimmers a few miles away that I know of, and has as great rep. They deal in everything from cars to marine and motorcycles. As the car is garaged and only goes out on dry days, the roof is always down, its just the screen that lets it down. The roof itself is perfect, but ideally could benefit from new rubbers.

Cheers, Al.

The price of replacement rubbers will almost certainly change your mind on that score! I've got a feeling they're NLA from Porsche, we had a search recently when a 968 cab owner managed to break both main bows (had not properly closed the roof, it lifted at about 80mph!), 944reanimation on Ebay USA was the only source we could find and he wants strong money for second hand parts, plus shipping and import duty! The bows were sourced new from Porsche Germany but the bill came to £2k fitted!

I treat all the seals every few months with Gummipflege, does them the world of good.

Hi Al. I was incredibly fortunate to have a decent trimmer quote me 200 all in. He had not done a 944 before and slightly underestimated the time needed. However he stuck to his original quote and done a terrific job. The guy is just outside Glasgow however so that may not be of great help!
Cheers

Cheers guys. I think I'll take it to the trimmers for a quote on the rear screen first of all.

Mine has had a new screen as well, it was prior to my ownership and the rest of the roof is in good condition, but it looks fine
