Well I am stumped the fuel injectors are working.

My S2 is still not running on number 4 cylinder. I have swapped the injectors over putting number 4 injector into number 1 and vice a versa. I have a spark still on Number 4 cylinder but when I checked the plug straight away I only had a faint smell of fuel on Number 4 sparkplug, which if the injector was working would surely be drenched in fuel. My big worry now is that although I caught the waterpump before the bearing totally seized and the belt wasn't snapped could I have bent a valve or broken the valve spring. However there is no clattering or noise coming from number 4 cylinder. I think my next options is to run a volt meter through the injector electrics and then if thats no good I will have to check the compression. Any other suggestions or thoughts?
As it had started misfiring and struggling to start before the pump went I have my fingers crossed that it is due to the fuel system.

Hmmm reading through I was thinking I'd be doing the same as you've suggested before anything else. Check wiring first then compression test. From what you've said I think prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Goodluck

The cam cover comes of reasonably easily, so youll be able to carry out a visual inspection without too much trouble.

Hope I am wrong but first thoughts are a broken valve spring (which does not always show up on a compression test because their are two springs, but can result in it not seating under load and eventually snapping the top or bottom off = lost engine) and a seized piston that occured when the water pump was poor (these can nip as you decelerate with the clutch in - so don't feel it - and free off leaving the rings trapped or bore scored and no pumping efficieny at low revs - should show up with a compression test).

The S2 has a much shallower water jacket in the block than the older 944's and only one inlet from the water pump on one side instead of two - one each side - so while it is OK and keeps temperatures well balanced when everything is going OK -it can lead to seizures - especially lower down the block where there is no coolant area - if anything goes wrong and reuslts in overheating.
