John!

Oh dear - sounds like it has fried the alternator. It must have been quite a lot of water that has got directly on to the alternator somehow, as they never normally suffer from this when washing, or driving in heavy rain.

If the battery meter in the car is reading normal battery voltage (12v) with the engine running, then the alternator isn't charging. It would read 14v if it was healthy.

The alarm will have gone off because of the low battery voltage, btw.

Hi Richard

I suspected as much but was hoping for a knight on a white charger (sorry for the pun) to give an easy response. I didn't think water amount was excessive bet hey ho...car is all clear on all other aspects......any idea what a new alternator cost at an independent?

An exchange alternator from Porsche is £300+vat +fitting, but most indies have cheaper sources. It is usually the regulator pack which fails, and some indies replace these.

However, I'm surprised Rod Naghar hasn't jumped in here to tell you about a refurbished alternator he has for sale!!! [:D] [:D]

Here I am! Lol thanks Richard :)

John my alternator went earlier this year but I've since replaced the alternator/diode pack with a new one (pictures and receipts of work done available) If you'd like to buy it off me let me know.

OK guys thanks a lot...ironic that the 996 forum is headed "Just add water!!" Have booked car in at RSJ for new alternator/diode etc courtesy of a lift from Mr RAC. Not much point me doing the job "solo" as it will ruin my manicure!! Cheers
