Wet carpets

Pun intended but when it rains it really pours. First my driver's seat get stuck in 1 position then 2 days later the passenger side carpet is wet. Before anyone suggests the sunroof drains I know they are definitely not at fault. It is a result of what I did a few days previously.

Last Friday I took off the door trim to fix a rattle. I peeled the foam protector back carefully and noticed that the bottom edge just below the speaker was very slightly damp. After fixing the rattle, I stuck the foam protector back. The weather was dry until the weekend and the next day found the carpet was wet. I removed the door trim again and the bottom was soaked. I poured water at the glass and there were no leaks. When I poured water at the mirror, particularly at the edge near the door and the door window, there was a steady stream of water coming from a small gap in the glue strip of the foam protector just below the speaker. I am about to replace the foam protector with a new one but I don't think I am actually fixing the original problem of the amount of water leaking past the door seal at the mirror. I thought of replacing the seal until I saw the price of it (over £134 + vat). Would anyone have any advice or should I bite the bullet and change the door seal 996 537 531 06?

Hi Minny

Just be aware lots of delicate electrics under the passenger seat, which could cause you a lot of trouble & cost you a lot more if they get wet.

So make sure you protect these while you try to ascertain the source of the leak, I would only replace if I was 95% sure that was the problem or you have eliminated everything else.

I was lucky as I noticed the damp carpets the next day after the rain and the electrics are fine. It is definitely from the door seal at the mirror end of the door as I can see the trickle from the bottom of the foam when i pour water at the door mirror triangle.

Note the bullet

if it cures it - job well done and no more worries - if not move on to the next possible?

Cheers

Replaced the door trim and sealing piece at the mirror and it helped 95%. When i pour water in the same area, there is the odd drip from the bottom foam protector, not a stream of water as before. I could have spent £50 to replace it but a little Tec7 seal has done the job. I will replace the foam protector if I have to remove it again.
