Almost got home after a 15 mile drive when I heard this horrible squeeling noise from the back of car...... best described a metallic squeel, doesn't appear to be in brake/disc region; more from the back of the engine area.

Bring the car to idle and no noise at normal tickover, car in neutral and increase rpm no noise !

Drove it around the block and it started again but not consistent we speed accept is does stop at idle.

Any ideas please ?

Thanks

Mark

Slipping drive belt for the altenator, air con compessor etc?? Sounds like the engine is going to give in and cost you a mortgage but actually not that horrific for the OPC to tighten.

Dapster,

My first assumptions were wrong, traced the noise to the off side rear wheel.

Have jacked the car up and taken the wheel off, there is definately a metallic noise as though the shield is rubbing but I can't see nought !!

Dont think I should drive the car to the near specialist which is 35 miles away ?

A few years ago, I had a similar problem on a track day. Terrible noise, sounded expensive. Only occurred when the car was in motion. No obvious cause.

Decided to see what would happen if I reversed the car. Slight noise, then a clunk and all was fine. It turned out that a piece of debris had lodged itself between the disc and the guard. Very relieved.

Oliver,

Just taken the car around the block and same noises again.

looking in the manual, I wondering if it could be the parking brake shoes, rubbing ?

have not got time to strip down tonight.

do you think i will cause major damage if i do a 35 mile drive ???

thanks

Is the noise the same in reverse?

If it's purely a 'rubbing' sound I'd risk a slow drive to a local garage.

no the noise does not happen in reverse

it is a rubbing sound, but when you drive above 10mph it gives a metallic/rubbing squeeling noise, best i can describe

Car is now fixed and thanks for all of the suggestions.

It turned out to be a handbrake shoe spring which had broken, spring replaced and all is ok.
