Purely by the number of posts you make. It seems to be something built in to Forum software.
Nothing to worry about - lots of stars may mean the user has posted a lot of messages, but it does not necessarily reflect the quality of the information posted!

The 'star' ratings increase as you make more posts Maximum requires over three thousand!!

When you get to hundreds of posts it seems your stars don't change very often at all. This might be a good thing, from a horoscopial point of view, assumiming Venus is in the assendance and Mars isn't in Urainus.
