What are the options for distributor rebuild/replacement ?

I've got a 2.4S with a worn or faulty distributor. The main issue is that the mechanical advance is happening much to quickly.

So far I've had one attempt at getting it rebuilt but they say they now can't do it. And I've had a quote from Porsche for an exchange unit for £770 !.

Anybody got any ideas ?

I was looking for a solution last year - I came across this site - I believe he will rebuild all later types and not just the early four cylinder mentioned.

Nick,

Thank's again for the link. I've been trying to double check that the distributor for sale is correct for a 72S.

Unfortunately I don't have my distributor at the moment but I believe it will have a Bosch number of 0 231 169 005. The one for sale is 0 231 184 003.

It looks like the 184 distributors are a later replacement but I can't find any specific details about a ...003 model. I'm concerned that the advance curve may not be correct. Do you have any information ?

Cheers

that is a very useful site to know.. I have oftern woundered.. if I can fit the guts from ( new from Bosch ) from a 050 into an 009 .. as it's the springs and wieghts that change the curve...

Andrew :-

0 231 184 003 was the replacement for the original 0 231 169 005 used in the '72 2.4S &
0 231 184 004 was the replacement for the original 0 231 169 011 used in the 2.7 RS

I'm fairly sure that in each case the distributors have the same advance curves.
