I have read the article on 996 issues. I am looking at a 2001 C4 tiptronic with 60k miles.

is there anything specific that that this year and spec suffer from?
And the cost to rectify each issue ?

thanks

If you are really concerned, then you may want to get Porsche centre to check the car over and resolve any issues and consider a warranty. I am sure others can confirm if this is possible as the 996 considered a modern classic (certainly the 3.4) and I believe must have strong service history in the first place. This will mean you will have to consider service by an OPC going forward.

This could cost a £££s or you may want to reserve a pot of cash for the unexpected as many do. As an example an engine out/in can cost about £3k on average and that's without extras/parts etc.

I would have a good inspection and service history. These are fabulous cars for the money and as above just drive and enjoy it.

Hi
I bought a Cayman S 6 years ago then panicked with all the scare stories. Bore scoring, IMS RMS usual stuff.

6 years on not a titter from the car recommend to anyone. But then.

I just paid top dollar for a 2002 3.6 996 from Porsche main dealer taking the view start with a good car and backup, no Porsche warranty however (Kept the Cayman)

Knowing all the possible faults I thought this is the best way forward. I was also told the issues often raised are rarer than people would make you think. No help to those that do suffer however.

I now have two ticking time bombs.

What am I saying. Buy the best one you can afford, keep it maintained and enjoy it.

If the worst should happen worry about it then.

That's my plan

Ive had my 996 for nearly two years, and have just got it back from an engine rebuild, cylinder head cracked on 1-3 bank, which seems to be a potential design flaw in the M96 engine, get a leak test done, if all good and you buy one, get a lower temp thermostat fitted and waterless coolant to take the pressure and heat out of the system. I had the IMS changed when out, the old one had no signs of wear, but the early ones such as mine had dual row bearings and seem ok, not sure on the 2001. Cars do go through suspension bushings etc, any squeaks, creaks, sign of worn bushes, however not too expensive to replace. Knowing all of this and the big bill Ive just had, would I change my mind and not purchase one?? Not a chance! The best on road sports car experience you can have at this price! You will always drive with a grin on your face!

That says it all.
