what are the things to look out for with an s2

please i have a 2.5 1984 luX but am considering getting a 1991 (j reg) S2 what are the usual problems to look out for?
 
Search - there are a couple of threads on what to look out for. Specific to the S2 it's all about the cam chain/tensioner/cams. Unfortunately that involves the cover coming off and also knowing what you're looking for. My experience is that it's usually bad news, so much so that I budgeted to replace the lot when I bought my cab. And I had to do it as well.
 
Oliver the only thing extra to check with an S2 over any other 944 is has the camchain and tensioner ever been replaced?

There are a few other things to look out for on an S2 that are diffrerent to the Lux. The Brake calipers are different, the same as a 220 Turbo and the stainless steel plates are prone to lift a little due to the alloy underneath corroding. It's hard to inspect this with the car on the ground, even with the pads still in, but if you feel a slight spongyness to the brake pedal then it could be down to this (makes the pads bind a little) The parts are cheap, but it is labour intensive so can be expensive. In the worst case you have to relplace the calipers.

The interior is a lot different to an 84 car, look out for the usual dash cracks, worn seat bolsters, gearstick and steering wheel. The electronic heater unit can cause some problems so make sure all the settings and temps work, some fixes are cheaper and easier than others. The clocks tend to not work, but are expensive to replace so most people don't bother. Make sure the central locking all works, and that the doorlock pins flash when the alarm is set. They have red LEDs as standard, and can cause problems with aftermarket radios as some of the loom is wired through it. The usual checks for sunroof leaks and electronics still applies too.

The front wishbones are cast units with integrated ball joints unlike the early cars and are not supposed to be rebuildable, although some companies do offer this service now. New ones from Porsche can run to £400-500 each, and some of the rebuild kits have poor quality reports, only lasting a year or so. Check for play here very carefully or you might be in for a nasty bill.

There are quite a few more small differences but I think these are the main ones I can think of right now. Like the guys say, do a search and read some of the other threads as they may provide some different info
