What Boxster to Buy

I am asking advice for a work colleague who wishes to purchase a boxster he has 18K to spend but does not necessary want to spend it all. I have managed to edge him away from a tip and the 2.5 but he is now pondering over the 2.7 or 3.2S. Unfortunately I have only driven a 3.2S so I have run out of steam so to speak[:)]. Really my question is that is there any noticeable difference between the 2.7 & 3.2S (Manual)? He is not concerned about options except for climate OBC & upgraded stereo but I think these are fairly common on most cars now. Mileage is not a concern as he will only do 5K miles per year but it would be nice to find one under 90K miles.

Whats the big thing about RMS is it that common ?[:mad:]

There is a fairly simple answer to this one. Well looked after 3.2 S models are very difficult to find for £18K therefore a 2.7 is his only real option and there are a lot available at that price.

Leaking RMS is indeed common. But no where near as much of an issue as some make out. If there are a couple of drips of oil under the car after being used, don't worry about it. Get it changed when the car needs a clutch. If there is a puddle of oil under the car and the oil clearly needs topping up when you check the dip stick, walk away.

That just about sums it up although I would add that my OPC said I had another RMS failure at my last service. That was 2 months ago and there is nothing on my garage floor.

You might have a long wait for a new clutch, mine is still the one that came with the car (85K).

brksy16 & JCB I see you both have 2.7's did you drive a 3.2S before you purchased? Is there a noticable difference in power between the 2 versions of the car?

I'm sure there is a noticeable difference in power between the two but, unless you're going spend a lot of time on the track, I doubt you'll miss that power on the main roads. My advice is don't test drive a 3.2S and look for the cleanest 2.7 you can get your hands on, especially if there's a budget involved. You won't miss the extra power if you haven't experienced it :). That's how I approached the problem when I was looking for mine and instead of looking at the S, I got a very clean and well specced 2.7 for a lot less money. On twisty A roads I don't feel like my 2.7 is lacking in any way.

For my model year the HP difference was 32.

On the track a 3.2 will edge away from you very slowly on a straight.

0-60 is about .5 of a second difference.

The biggest difference is the items that are standard with an S and extras with a 2.7.
