What Brake Pads?

While this post may solicit advice, I really just wanted to share an experience. During 2003 summer I swapped out a set of half worn Pagid Blues and took a chance buying Mintex pads at half the price. I ordered 1155s (race compound) for the front and 1144s (fast road/track compound) for the rear. Well this is what they looked like after one and a half track days [] Check out the uneven wear and the bent backing plate.

Really good.
They are the best stoppers I've owned. Plenty of life left for a true test at Knockhill on Wed coming up.
I did however not clean the brake dust off my trackday Fuchs for a couple of weeks and they are now a cosmetic disaster with black pitting in the rims and painted centres, wether this is a by product of PF pads or if it would have happened anyway with any pad I don't know, but I do know it will not happen again.

Thanks Mike, pretty encouraging, as this is what my local specialist is recommending. You say they are the best you've tried, have you tried the Pagid Blues or Porterfield (compound?) pads? Also, are you running with performance brake fluid (e.g. AP600 or SRF), or just DOT4 /5.1?

How are your road wheels coping with the dust from them (I presume you're not changing pads between road/track)?

I've only had my car for 10 months, and as far as I know it has the std Porsche pads in. I did my first TD in this car last week, and as expected, reduced the brakes to mush. I bled them at the weekend, and was very surprised to get no air out. Maybe it was because the bleed nipple is on the inside, and as I raised one side at a time, the calliper was canted nipple side down. Maybe there was no air, but I can't really believe glazed/overheated pads would result in such a soft pedal. Poor bite and feel yes, but not the pedal on the floor...

Can anyone recommend a vendor of Pagid and Porterfield pads (and PF , I suppose too)?

Any other thoughts over and above what's already been said would be gratefully received.

Cheers,

Jon

Neil Bainbridge (BS Motorsport) has PF at prices that seem cheaper than Porterfield or Pagid. Ninemeister have Porterfield. Questmead have various pads at good prices - worth a call as they specialise in this kind of stuff. I got my last set of Pagids from JAZ.

I have used Pagid orange , blue, and black over the years and also Porterfield.
The Perf friction 97 compound seem to work best on my car.
I am using Castrol SRF and AJR cooling ducts on the front
demon tweeks are stocking PF now.

I'll be up fairly early at Knockhill around 5.15 depending on traffic, you are more than welome to listen to the fascinating story of how I've wasted a shed of money "improving my car" and perhaps come out for a few laps in "the WHITE LEGEND" ( ha ha)
See ya
Mike

Knockhill -- Brakes were well up to the task and I had the luxury of going home with a solidish pedal.
So my current set up of Boxster fronts , cooling ducts , Castrol SRF and Perf friction 97 compound is withstanding the only test worth doing.
