Porsche reintroduced one of their most iconic body styles in 1989 - the Speedster. This uncompromising variant hadn't been offered since 1959, a time when 356's were rolling out of the factory and the 911 was still five years from inception. The first 911 Speedster had actually been displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1987 but it would be 16 months before production actually began in January 1989.

Regular 911 Cabriolet body shells were used for the mechanically standard Speedster, these being equipped with a cut-down, more steeply raked aluminium framed windscreen and special frameless one-piece side windows. The normal Cabriolet hood mechanism was completely discarded in favour of a flimsy emergency roof that stowed under a distinctive body-coloured plastic moulding.

Both the standard narrow-body and far more widely available wider Turbo shell were available in most markets although bizarrely only the latter could be specified in North America and Germany.

Inside, the seat rails were dropped by 20mm, the seats themselves having been a combination of Sport backs with standard lower sections. The rear seats were junked and the vacant area carpeted like the Club Sport, an optional storage box (again like that of the CS) having been a sensible upgrade. A manual heater and wind-down windows were fitted as standard. 2065 Speedster's were built (all in 1989), 1894 of which were Turbo-bodied, the remaining 171 having been the 50kg lighter narrow body type. 63 right-hand drive Speedster's were imported to the UK and 823 went to North America with 217bhp engines.

Something of a time warp car, this extremely fine example was supplied to the current owner in 1996 by Bramley Motors with just 5km recorded.

It should be noted that that it was first registered only a few years earlier in 1991. The previous owner of the Speedster was a gentleman called Vern Schuppan, an F1 and Indianapolis 500 driver but perhaps more interesting, he was a Porsche Le Mans driver and won this most famous of races in 1983 in a Porsche 956 (after having been second in 1982 and 1977).

Prior to that, it was owned by the Osaka Art Corporation in Japan. It comes with a rare Strosek hardtop, a bespoke item by a company accredited by Porsche to modify and improve the stock item.

It could also be said that it has a full Porsche service history with stamps by AFN and then Camtune, who were so good that they were subsequently absorbed to become part of the official Porsche service department. Complete with a full MoT test certificate as well as a UK registration document and all service books, this extremely rare "˜narrow body' version of Porsche's collectable speedster has both price and style on its side.

Hi daro911,
I spoke to Coys today and this car went for £32,000,

Do you know of any other 89 Speedsters that are for sale?

Thanks,
Al

I viewed this Speedster about a month ago, with a view to buying it - but declined. It's an interesting car, but for the money needed too much spending on it to get it into good condition. It's certainlty a rare car being narrow body. Good to see interest in the Speedtsers at the moment (both 3.2 Carrera and 964), we may have to start buying back some of the ones we sent to HK !
