What Do You Use Your Rear Seats For?

I cant make my mind up whether to remove the rear seats from my car. I intended to do a lot of things to it when I bought it, but I find myself reluctant now, to remove perfectly functioning features like electric windows and sunroof - I havent even removed the rear wiper...

I dont think that I have ever carried people sat in the back of a 924/944/968, apart from two children to Alton Towers in 1992! I moved up to a 968 shortly after which didnt have rear seats and I didnt miss them, in fact, I found the larger load deck useful and since coming back to the fold I dont think that Ive ever been in a situation where carrying a rear seat passenger was likely.

So, if you had a 968CS rear seat carpet, what would you do?

Sell it to a wannabe racer. - When I park in public places I like to be able to use the roller blind when there is anything valuable in the boot. - If I need to brake very hard in case of emergency while I carry anything large in the boot I like the idea that the folding panel may prevent anything to jump forward. Also, the original elastic net used to prevent objects of moderate size to move in the boot works fine the two plastic brackets that are fixed onto the folding panel, and I couldn't be bothered spending time making separate brackets to be able to use the net without the folding panel. - When I go to holidays I always use a soft luggage that I put in the rears seats, it should be better held if the folding panel is present. - Possibility to hide small objects in the rear seats when folding down the seat panel. - When driving hard I have found that the added mass of the rear seat would dampen somehow the higher polar moment of inertia typical of the transaxle layout of our cars - the rear end gets too lively without the rear seats, and things gets worse when adding power. It doesn't get 911-bad but bad enough to get noticed I think. - Always better to be able to carry someone in the back just in case. - I don't like the ghetto look when the folding panel is missing.

I am a wannabe racer Tom! [:D] My luggage blind isnt fantastic, although it does work. A blanket works just as well though and a bungee cargo net can be secured to bolts fitted to the tapped mounts (which are actually for child seats, I believe). As you suggest, a real benefit of the rear seat back is that it will keep anything stowed up against it in place in the event of a sudden stop, but I really dont carry a deal around, so its a spurious benefit, really. I dont intend to lose too much rear weight alone, as Ive already struggled with a super lightweight car which was far too light at the rear (no rear seats, spare wheel, tools or wiper or other motors and with a polycarbonate hatch and a lightweight exhaust). I think that this will also suit my sparco seats as well as the original black script seats. Ive also got a set of black leather sports seats and a matching rear set which Id thought about fitting, but their value is such now that I think Im going to leave them covered up in my spare room, because Id be constantly worried about spoiling them... Of course, if I do fit a roll cage then its a far more simple choice, but I cant make my mind up about that either. Simon

I had the back of the rear seats out of mine for a while but put them back as the car looks much smarter with them in, now if I could have a 968cs style flat shelf (not the seat delete version) with carpet that matched I would probably prefer it, appears much more useful as it extends the cargo area and looks very smart, cant say its on the top of my list at the moment though. Which do you have Simon? Edd

Ive got an original carpet seat Edd, for want of a better description. On my 968, from memory, the load deck extending shelf had a pair of thin brackets underneath, which secured it to the centre seat belt mountings, but this carpet doesnt have holes in it, which I cant explain. Simon

I use my back seats for a child or sometimes the wife [:D] Have alos used them for Christmas presents, one Christmas our car looked more like Santas slay than a 944.

Our dog is too big to fit in one bucket! But I do use them for my girls regularly - the youngest is 15!

no way our dog would fit in the seats lol, he does go in the back sometimes at a squeeze.

They weigh a ton,if you don't intend on carrying anyone I would pull them out,you can bolt your remote canisters for your race suspension where the seat cushions used to be[:D]

Gosh. Call me fuddy-duddy and boring and all that but I use the rear seats in my S2 for passengers - and fairly often too. The rear seats were what allowed me to have a 944; the fact that it is a four-seater, and you can use it as such. If I could have got away with a two-seater as our only car I'd have bought an MX5. Oli.

I don't think I've heard of a less likely use for the rear seats of a 944![:D] This is all I use my rear seats for:

The rear seats can be useful at times, example, a good friend of mine had an emergency in Cornwall when his father was taken ill, speed was of the essence. He wanted his wife to go with him and she wanted my wife for support which meant we all went in the 944. That was the fastest trip I've ever done to Cornwall, over 300 miles and then the return journey back to London as we all had work thye next morning. The girls found the trip very comfortable but then they are both fairly short, I've been in the back of a 944 at Le Mans for a very short trip and had a nasty pain in my neck both during and after, so i guess yes the seats can be used but only for short adults and children. I'll be leaving mine where they are but then I like the car to remain visually original where I can, others may not and that's fine as it's a personal choice situation. Pete

I bought our first 944 when the boys were 8 and 5 and for the next 10 years we only had 944's so yes the rear seats got daily use. The 944 is a true all round car that can be used for families, shopping, tip runs, track days you name it. Now they are 22 and 19 the rear seats don't get used as much but they still do when the need arises.
