What does this all mean?

For those that read my Fingers Crossed thread, you will note I was having a problem with a lumpy idle. Well Guildford OPC have had the car today and replaced the coil pack on cylinder #5 (not bad for a car 3,000 miles and 10 weeks old!). Big difference!

When I got there this morning I asked them to attach the PIWIS unit and let me see the readout live. I also asked them to print off a version at the end of the day, which I now have in front of me.

One of the measurements was the roughness reference. This morning #5 was reading somewhere between 1.6000 and 1.8000. The figures now read:

Roughness Reference Value 10.3670
Engine Roughness Cylinder 1: 0.5280
Engine Roughness Cylinder 6: 0.7007
Engine Roughness Cylinder 2: -0.5230
Engine Roughness Cylinder 4: -0.5230
Engine Roughness Cylinder 3: 0.3503
Engine Roughness Cylinder 5: -0.3059

The other improvement is that, whilst the individual cylinders read 0, the ignition counter missfire detection was reading detection approx 22000 and now reads 52.

That all sounds good to me, but what the blazes do all these numbers mean?

Anyone?

The coked up left pipes "feature" has not been solved; other than being told not to worry about them. I will keep a look out on this.

No idea what it means but would be interested to know. Do you think it possible that the problem with cylinder #5 might have led to unburnt fuel being passed to the exhaust system and that this caused the sooty tail pipe?

That is my thought (and hope!), however, I do not know if 5 goes to the left pipes. I do know 4 and 6 do. Logic dictates 5 would too with 1,2 and 3 the right. That is a guess however.

I have a 400 mile trip next weekend and will see how the pipes are,

A number of us have had to have our engines replaced due to the sooty left tailpipe issue. Basically it means that there is damage to the cylinders that feed out of the left side pipes.

Might be good for you to do a search for the threads on here, rennteam and rennlist.

Also, you should keep a record of how much engine oil you are having to use.

Good luck and also, which OPC is telling you not to worry about this? Would be useful to know so I can avoid them in the future.

Ronnie,

Thank you and it was because I read those posts that I had the pipes looked at. Re the oil I have used 0.4litres for the 1st 1,500 miles and none since. Therefore any damage must be very very slight.

The car is now running beautifully and I have a 500 mile journey next week to see if the issue repeats itself. Snarf's comment above about unburnt fuel from #5 not working due to the cracked coil pack makes a lot of sense.

Having had the tests done and received a copy of the before and after analysis, I do not have anything to worry about right now. I also have it on record that I have had this checked and been told not to worry about it. Therefore if something goes wrong Porsche will have a difficult time denying it.

And I still do not know what those numbers in my original post mean!
