From the rear parcel shelf - what does it do. Is it part of the alarm? Ventilation? Something else?

Enlighten me please !

I thought it was part of the heating system.........

But i'm ready to be proved wrong![;)]

... well I cut them off to remove the parcel shelf ! Anyone need an 89 parcel shelf and rear seat belts?

Heating/ventilation was one of my thoughts as well. I haven't checked to see if it changes any functionality yet.

Do not have it here on my car, but something similar by the heater controls / steering wheel - this I know is to do with the automatic heating control.

My car has one, and I assumed that it was the alarm sensor (ultrasonic) I guess you could test this by taping over it and you will either boil or the alarm will go off.

I cut the wire, closed the door and locked it. The alarm didn't go off so I assume its OK. I may have to solder it back together again later for a fully functioning alarm. BTW, I just have the factory alarm and immobiliser, nothing fancy.

I have the dash sensor for the heater - I know that.

Yes its dieting. Has been for a few weeks now. Need to get it on scales to see what has been acheived. Among the deletions are:

Rear windscreen wiper
Rear heater blower motor
Backdate exhaust and super lightweight muffler
930 sport clutch
Lightweight "super trick" aluminium pressure plate
Parcel shelf and rear seat belts
All rear sound deadening

On the list are:

Rear bumper pads
Front heater blower motors
Anything else I see "while I am in there"

Might have to invest in a holesaw...[;)]

your right graham its part of the alarm, when I took out my rear shelf my wires had been cut.
as far as i know they only work will the factory fit alarm. My car has a switch in the centre concel to turn these on and off .

Richard,
I see that you are looking to remove your bumper pads, I am also interested in this mod. What are you doing to replace the number plate lights? I believe that a couple of PP regulars have used BMW 2002 lights available from PP, but would be interested in knowing if you have identified any other options.
Thanks

Ian

It's an ultrasonic sensor for the car's alarm. If you disconnect it, the cabin will only be protected by the door switches and the alarm will not detect intrusions that do not use the doors - broken window for example - or movements in the car when the alarm is armed.

Ian, yours is a temp sensor as you rightly say.

Holden Motoring have some - mainly MG or TR OE stuff but if I can get them in black rather than chrome, they would work. I am waiting to see what the holes look like in order to see what I have to cover up. www.holden.co.uk. If BMW 2002 lights work then I would be interested in where I can get those and indeed what they look like.

Richard,
If you go to the BMW part of PP, find your way to the 2002 bit and into electrical parts, look for licence plate lights. They are Hella items and cost $18.80 each. If I can get this to work here is a picture of some.

"That's a sweet looking rear you have there" !!![:)]

Just needs to ditch the fog light and update the reflector (like I did [:)])

Is that just with the bumper pads removed and the lights added ? Way to go if you can Richard.

Are the pads easy to remove ?

The job appears easy to do if you believe the PP posts, it just depends how far you want to go. The car in the picture only had the pads removed and the two holes on each side welded up and re-painted. Another one I have pictures of removed the rubbing strips on either side as well, made it look really smooth whilst maintaining most of the protection. As an interim measure I may buy some coloured hole plugs to fill the pad holes and see how long I can bear that look.

Richard,
Another tempting picure of the same, but a better view of those lights. I have more of other cars if you wish.

This is genius - looks superb. I`ve already decided to copy this look onto my car aswell. Any other suggestions on suitable lamps? I like the BMW ones though...

I've checked a few options out and the BMW 2002 ones look best to me, they are also a good price. I've also seen some on Pelican Parts that have what look like chrome headed bolts holding the number plate on which double as lights. They clean up the bumper a treat but just look a bit 'pimpy' to me.

Ian

An idea Iam playing with is to fit a bit of stainless with a 90 deg bend on it between the bumper and the lower valance to move the number plate even lower the wires for the existing number plate lamps are plenty long enough to reach the new plate. The over riders are very easy to remove 2 bolts inside the bumper to each one.
Just some very small lamps to sort out then.
