From a great thread here:
http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=459395

I have created a sister thread where we just list the below - to see what oil people are actually using - Ive started us off:

_________________________________________________________________
Car: 1989 Porsche 944 Lux
Engine: 2.7 8v
Mileage 78k
Current Engine Oil Used: 10w40 Semi Synth
How often Chaned: Will do every 6k
Comments: Looking at the posibility of changing to a fully synth

Over to you..... A

1989 944 S2 race car, 174K miles, Valvoline VR-1 20w-50, will be changed 'often'.
1993 968 road car, 154K miles, currently 5w-40 some ? oil will be changing to 15w-50 Mobil 1, then 15w-40 Valvoline long life next spring after I have used up the Mobil 1.

1990 944 Turbo
167k miles
Silkolene 15w50 (v expensive synth from Opie[;)])
Changed every 2-3k

Have used lots of different oils - my cars are used on trackdays, so fairly frequent changes. Track temps - sump 130C, post cooler 110C. Millers CFS 10w60 is a great track oil - used on lots of cars. Suprisingly I found Castrol Edge 10w60 increased oil usage considerably. I picked up some VR-1 10w60 semi synth very cheap & will give that a go next. Neil - I noticed there are 2 VR-1 20w50's in the US, one for "racing" with higher ZDDP's - what's the situation over here?

Mobil 1 15W/50 for me.

Do not even contemplate a 0W/40 synthetic. It will be like filling your engine with paraffin and will break out of your oil seals forming a path never to seal again.

1990 944 Turbo, 156k miles, Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w-50, changed at approximately 7-10k miles (expensive).

Car: 1989 Porsche 944 Turbo
Engine: 3.2 8v
Mileage 130k
Current Engine Oil Used: 15W50 Fully Synth
How often Changed: every 6k or 6 months
Comments: 10k on this engine, uses approx 100ml every 2k miles

_________________________________________________________________

Car: 1990 Porsche 944 S2
Engine: 3.0 16v
Mileage 190k
Current Engine Oil Used: 10w40 Semi Synth in summer and 5w40 Semi in winter
How often Changed: every 6k or 6 months
Comments: 190k on this engine, uses approx 300ml every 6k miles

1991 S2, 156k miles, using Mobil Synt S 10w/40, not expensive and available in every branch of Halfords country wide.

No idea how much it uses, but I never need to top it up unless I've been on the track. I doubt my engine is totally oil tight if truth be told.

Changed every year, so 5k miles.

1989 S2. 150k miles.

10W40 semi (GM's finest). Changed every 5k miles. Does about 15k miles a year.

Uses a little oil, but the quantity seems to vary - from around 500ml to 1500ml in 5k miles (never understood why!)

Oli.

Car: 1990 Porsche 944 S2
Engine: 3.0 16v
Mileage: 122k
Current Engine Oil Used: Motul 300V 15W50
How often Changed: every 6k
Comments: oil usage, nil when driven sedately, reasonably heavy when driven too fast for too long (I suspect valve guides)
_________________________________________________________________

Car: 1990 Porsche 944 turbo
Engine: 2.5 8v
Mileage: 175k
Current Engine Oil Used: Motul 300V 15W50
How often Changed: every 6k
Comments: original block, head replaced at 120k ; oil usage nil, except on start ups in sub zero temps (winter).

Car: 1989 Porsche 944 S2
Engine: 3.0 16v

Car: 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo
Engine: 2.5 8v
Mileage 150 kkms
Current Engine Oil Used: Motul 300 V 15w50
How often Chaned: Every year (around 3k)
Comments: No oil consumption (zero, nada) since engine has been fully rebuilt

944 2.5 Lux 1987 143K Miles Valvoline turbo 15/50 Mineral SL Spec bought in bulk.
2-3K a year, oil changed once a year.
Knackered rings so oil consumption varies proportional to loud pedal usage []

They actually have 3 variants available;
5w-50 Fully Synth
10w-60 Semi Synth
20w-50 Mineral

Although it often seems that the 20w-50 is more popular. Don't know which has the highest ZDDP content but as you no doubt know these oils are 'famous' for their high ZDDP content.

reading the thread that Patrick posted, there are two different 20w50's in the US - one "not for street use" that has v high ZDDP - I didn't know whether they sold 2 different formulations over here

There are different oils available in different countries. I would imagine that the UK may vary from the US and certainly down under.

1989 951 with a spare 1986 motor. Running 1.5bar on E85 daily.
Oil used is a VR racing mineral oil 25w/60 basically all year round with regular changes approx every 2000-3000kms.

Series one 944, <150,000 miles. Currently running superb quality but wholly unsuitable Silkolene Pro-S 10W-40 synthetic. Consumption is next to nil but Ive lost about one atmosphere of pressure all over when the engine is properly hot.

I will shortly be changing and reverting to Castrol GTX High Mileage (20W-50) mineral oil and increasing the frequency of changes as required.

UPDATE:

Car: 1989 Porsche 944 Lux
Engine: 2.7 8v
Mileage 78k
Current Engine Oil Used: 15w50 Mobil 1 Motorsport
How often Chaned: Will do every 6k
Comments: Just changed from 10w40 Semi to Mobil 1 15w50 Motorsport fully synth... Very happy with the results.. Engine seems quieter, and I have gained 1 unit of preasure when the engine oil is HOT.... Will be using this from now on - and the 15w50 is cheap from the guy I found on eBay who turned out to be a top guy.
