What I did on my holidays by Rick Pearson aged ....

Take a look at www.efgmotorracing.com

The chosen vehicle for the Tunisian Classic Rally I'd signed up for wasn't finished... so there was a last second substitution.... the RS!

Some stunning Porsches here.... mine the least suited to the conditions!

Cheers
Rick

"so we had to substitute with the only car we could beg/borrow/steal that was vaguely interesting:" - Excuse me, vaguely interesting,[:D].
Seriously, hats off to you Rick - never again will I suggest the RS could have better suspension for poor roads! Love some of the pictures, 'specially the mirror shot of the Roller past the cage.

Serious respect Rick - you do some truly nutty things, convincing you wife (pregnant?) to travel with you in a clubbie on this trip is immense!!!

Good work

just skimmed it, looking forward to reading properly - looks a great trip

oh and you do have a screw loose.....probably suits you doing the Nuts Classic[:D][;)]

Just thumbed through the pics...what a journey in a RS. Real petrolhead stuff.

What´s closer to the end of the world, Rick? Tunisie or Oschersleben?

Rgds,

Hacki

Oschersleben isn't the end of the World... although I'm pretty certain you can see it from there... ;-)

It's been a bumpy experience... trying to do the regularities at 50kph on single track broken roads has meant some interesting sideways moments when recovering time lost to goat flocks/dogs/potholes big enough to swallow an RS whole!

Will post a cool pic of the car in the middle of the desert and you can believe we did indeed cover over 2000km of the 3rd World in a full clubbie. Who said the suspension is too hard for regular use???

Cheers
Rick

Couple of photos of RS at yesterdays' lunch break

And showing the restart from there...

I might not be as avid as Rich, but given car hasn't missed a beat there will be some serious polishing next weekend!

Well boys it was awesome fun!
Did more miles in the RS in 9 days than in my total ownership so far.
She didn't miss a beat. Turned on the key first time everytime. Was as happy pulling 200kph on dead straight roads across "the Chott" as she was "sideways with style" on gravel or burbling on the over-run thru the villages at 50kph. Got enough luggage in her for me and the missus for the whole trip and to be honest was an absolute blast!

So how does the shot peened look suit the old 'gal ???

What an adventure [;)]

My missus complained about the passenger footwell fire extinguisher of my GT3 CS, on the short drive across to SCoM on Sunday !!

I've decided that she's going to get a full repaint and rear wing etc back to the original 3.8 RS C/S spec once I've got the time/money and found a nice 3.8 motor. So I'm not being too precious about the paint now. It is true that there is a bit of gravel rash on the plastic bit at the bottom the leading edge of the rear arches but otherwise nothing serious.
Problem is if you don't use these cars, one day you wake up and you have missed out because you are too old to drift a 450bhp 911! ;-)

Live fast etc...

And yes, an awesome adventure. The first day coming off the mountains on a deserted road except for us, chasing a series 1 '73 RS being driven properly listening to the engine and smelling the Castrol R will live with me a LONG while.

Wow.
What were you intending to take?

I'm glad you had such an epic adventure, well done.

You have added a great chapter to the book, on this most interesting car, that I hope will be written. At least a website.
I rather like the wide body, without the wing. Just might be my favourite looking RS.

I was also in the ring display at Ragley, in a 'normal' variant.

What colour might you paint it?

Yes, she's quite something.... that's why I'm so reticent to change anything... but if I do, I'll take her back to her original Grand Prix White with the rear wing and splitter...

But seeing the pro photos from the Tour today, she looked awesome... look at the light on her in the following in front of the kasbah at Keirouan....

Would have taken the DB2 if she'd been finished... but that wasn't to be.

sounds like a proper drive in a rs,looks great in the photos

just when i had thoughts of selling mine....this is why they are so special WHEN YOU USE THEM THE WAY THEY SHOULD BE[:D]

I did more miles in her in 9 days than I've done since I bought her! Really got to understand what a capable bit of kit she is... huge fun. That said, I'd have swapped with the boy in the '73 RS, he was in his 70's and having a proper blast in one of the first 500 built, was struggling to stay with him!
That said... wasn't much getting near us in a straight line though given we were about 200kg heavier but with twice the power!
Decided that I need to replace the tyres though... they seem to date from almost the birth of the car I think... may even be factory issue! The Tunisian roads seemed to be lacking a LOT of grip.... ;-)
