what is better, bare metal respray or sand back, re-prime and top coat

I have been quoted £11000 labour to bare metal re-spay my 993 Targa and they have said they will not do a non bare metal respray. Is the labour charge reasonable and is bare metal respray the only answer. The paint on the car is good, it is just that people have re-spayed before and there is a colour mismatch on different parts of the car. I just want to make the paint uniform across the car.

I just had my 993 C4S completely resprayed original colour (black).

There have been a few rust spots (front and back scuttles and elsewhere) over the years which I've dealt with quickly but the 'black' had gone blotchy with touch-ups and now was going to get blotchier.

I was easily sold the idea of a complete sand-back, re-prime and paint - and he (coincidentally, as I found out later) came highly recommended by friends in the auto industry.

Have a look at https://en-gb.facebook.com/Extreme-finishing-Basingstoke-1160580647289915/ and https://en-gb.facebook.com/pg/Extreme-finishing-Basingstoke-1160580647289915/photos/?ref=page_internal. They show various stages of my car's progress. Mine is the only 993 on the site. Love the wheels. And she's mine - all mine. And it cost a lot less than what you've been quoted. If you're in the Basingstoke area - or less than a day's drive away - give Jamie a call. Very professional - he called-in Porsche experts when unsure - kept me updated - obviously enjoyed doing my car.

I had my Arena Red 993 C4 resprayed a couple of years ago at Specialised Paintwork in Reading (round behind the Porsche OPC & UK Head Office) http://www.specialisedpaintwork.com/

It wasn't a bare metal respray except where there was rust and the glass was removed. Also the windscreen scuttle was completely replaced as she was suffering from the dreaded 993 windscreen rust.

Can't remember the exact costs but I think it was around £8/9K and that included the replacement scuttle.

All in all, very pleased with the work - another option for you to try.

Kind regards
Anton

You are being completely ripped off. That works out over £1000/panel.

Do not use them your car has a galvanised body shell, a bare metal respray is not required nor will it do any good. You only need to go down to the metal where rust is exposed. Please note with the removable trim and rubbers it is not entirely neccessary to do windows out either which should agg about £600 to the price

Any decent paintshop can match your existing paint especially if its black, Which panels dont match!? and what really needs painting

I can put you in contact with my bodyshop in KC Autocolours in Witney Oxfordshire who would charge somewhere around a third of that price and he has done at least 10 * 9993's that I know off.

Hi Matthew,
Looks awesome, they did a great job. Do you mind sharing how much the work cost? Thinking of the same for mine. Cheers, Andy

Had my 993 C2 fully taken back to bare metal and resprayed. Mine is - high mileage example which I’ve been putting back to immaculate condition.

Happy to have a chat in case helpful.

£11K is a bit more than I would have thought even for a full glass out bare metal job. Around the £8K is what I have in mind when I get mine done eventually.

like most of us I read various classic car magazines and articles and can't help but notice that the price quoted for refurb has increased in line with the value of the car!
