8 Months - just 8 soddin months and 8k since my RMS was replaced and guess what? The thing is leaking again.

Did I read somewhere that there is a new seal from Porsche? If so when did it start being used because if it was over 8 months ago - it don't work [][][][]

As far as I know it the new tools not new seal which made the re-occurrence down to a handful.

More a dam nuisance now as I don't live that close to an OPC and I will loose the car for a few days. The RMS work will be warrantied and I have Porsche warranty too. I will continue to drive the car but I will get it done as soon as I can because the amount of oil in the drip tray was more than the first time around.

So the tools have changed that inserts the seals - Lets hope the guys at the OPC in Tunbridge Wells have them.

THX,

Just found something on the PCNA website and it does confirm my thoughts that I had read there is a new seal. I tried to copy the link but for some reason it won't work when I paste into this board. Anyway it reads:

"Porsche has a New RMS for all the 986/987/996 and 997. The part number is 997 101 212 00 and is a copy of the Cayenne seal that I suggested using. I was told by a PCNA official in Atlanta's Technical department that our boards are monitored and utilized for insight on problems and repairs. I have not seen the seal but was told it was designed in regards to my comments on the leaks etc."

This is fairly new (Sept I think) so I will be asking if this part will be used on my car and apparently the Author is a respected Porsche engine expert belonging to the PCNA . (have we got one of those?)

Notice the part number has a 997 designator ??????

Mine was changed mid this year and I was told it was the new tool that made the difference in re-occurence, it would be good to have an official status from Porsche UK or AG. Anyone in PCGB with a direct channel?

I don't think that it makes any difference whether manual or tip. My tip cab required a RMS replacement in March 04. When I had the car serviced in March this year it was leaking again and the RMS was changed again but under the warranty on the original repair. The OPC informed me that all OPC repairs were guaranteed for a period of 2 years. Took the car out for a spin this weekend and guess what I found on the garage floor? Guess I'll be having another conversation with my local OPC soon.

Mine, lasted untill I got home about 8 miles away .......................... Porsche centre Tonbridge !

You guys scare me. I know the RMS issue is real and, by the sound of it, all too common. What about the other 996 achilles heel, the complete engine failure caused by bearing failure in bottom end? I forget the actual details, as reported in last months 911 & PW.

Anyone round here suffered that one??

Regards Neil

Has anybody seen a picture of this latest RMS ? my 'new' one seems to be holding up, but in Dec I will have it very closely inspected.

When I wrote I thought I had seen it somewhere I hadn't relealised it was on this Forum (Doh!)

Perhaps the ultimate Scouser plate (or not as the case may be) which I spotted yeaterday on a SL55 would ward off the evil spirits.............1 RMS [:)]

My heart bleeds for you guys with the Jowett plus2 engines. There must be loads of ex Range Rover V8 engines around that do not leak oil or even Subaru can you not get transplants?

Kevin,

I bet your Maclaren SLR doesn't leak.[;)] But if it does....$$$$$$

My RMS leak has decided to stop and seal itself. I just couldn't find the time to get it fixed. Had it booked in then cancelled it thyen booked then cancelled....Then after 6 months it just stopped. I've had the engine steam cleaned and now NO LEAK for about 2 months. Perhaps they are self healing[&:]

Si 996 Carrera 4[]

Perhaps they are self healing
Oh no! If someone from Porsche reads that idea, it will become the stock answer. You can just hear it now,
" yes sir, the engine has detonated but if you wait a while it'll get better"
On the bright side, we will not need to buy warranties any more.
