Spoke to Andy P about this, as I didn't think 69 cars had it. Its part of the Smog control system, which you never see as they are all taken off. This is a diaphram that controlled problems with the cars idling properly with the pump.

Looking for a smog pump pic as we speak.

Is it the original engine?

Gavin, I posted this same question over on 'another' forum & Alex (Retromotor) posted the following answer:

"the throttle valve compensator (as it's called) slows down the throttle preventing the preparation of a over rich mixture. The throttle valve is only a small part of the whole exhaust emission control system, so is completely useles on its own - most of these systems were junked back when these cars were new. My 68 912 was the same. I just disconnected it and blanked off the manifold vacuum outlets. As for the electrical connector on the valve I never found out what it was supposed to connect to. Alex"

I've got the same on my '69. Can't say if it's working or not.

I also seem to be missing the tubes that come off the air intakes and disappear behind the fan housing. Guess i don't need them?

Isn't it the probe that's going to land on mars?

Yes - I saw an engine with Andy P with one of these. It is to keep up the idle on late 912 engines. When the speed drops it makes sure it doesn't stall. I think it attaches to the rod down the back of the fan housing?
