What model 944?

Hi,

i've found a rusty 944 on my friends farm and was wondering how i go about identifying what model it is. I've got the engine number off it, can i tell from that?

Leon

I have little doubt that you could tell from a chassis number, if someone had the right lists but I wouldn't think you would get that information through the forum.

How about posting a few snaps on we should be able to give you the details in no time.

The age could be a good clue and we could tell you that from the vin number.

On the age front :-

Pre 85 it is a Lux

86 - 88 Could be Turbo, Lux or S. Turbo will say Turbo on the back (bit of a give away) and also on the air box. The S will say Ventliner (or someting similar) on the rubbing strip behind the front wheels and have a twin cam engine, otherwise it is a Lux.

89 - Turbo or S2

Pound to a penny 2.5 lux with old dash, ie pre 85.5 model.

PS there are not many rusty 944's around of any type, the bodys on these cars are unbelivable at resisting rust.

I don't know what year it is as it's an irish number plate on it. I do have the VIN number though so how would you find the year from that?

On the back it just says 944 and you're right it's not rusting....just a load of moss!!

i've got a few pics but don't know how to put them on here. What is an old dash? The rev counter is 'upside down'

Leon

If it's a European car the chassis number should begin WPOZZZ

The next two numbers will be either 94 (for a N/A) or 95 (for a Turbocharged)

The next letter is the model year starting at D for 1983 up to N for 92

The final letter is an N then comes the serial number for that individual car

Look at the model year letter and work out what it is from Johns post above as to what was made in each year. I will tell you now what it definitley is not - a cabriolet [:D]

The rev counter is 'upside down'

Sounds like an old dash as the rev counter is part of the instrument housing on a later "oval" dash model.

If the rev counter has been turned this could indicate that the car has been raced or rallied or previously owned by a boy racer. Racers often like the rev counter needle to be a 12:00 at optimum revs.

Thanks for all your help so far! [:D]

Diver944 the VIN starts like you say and then follows 94 for an N/A but then has either a 0EW or OEW as the next 3 characters. Would this mean that i am looking at an 1984 LUX? It does have a lot of electrics like windows, sunroof and a switch down by the accelerator pedal to open the boot!

John, the rev counter is on the right of the dash and has an MPG needle and the rev counter starts at approx 1 o'clock with 0rpm going round clockwise to the redline at 6400rpm ish at approx 9 o'clock.

old dash is three circular pods, one with temp and fuel gauge, one with speedo and one with the upside down rev counter, after 85.5 the dash underwent considerable modification and they are called the ovel dash models.

The old dash is a very minor rework on the 924 dash.

I just realised I missed out a letter - oops [8|]

Take a look at http://www.cantonia.com/watercooler.html and on the page for engine and chassis numbers it explains it better than my ramblings in the middle of the night.

The O in your number means its a USA/Canada model
The E is for 1984
The W should be an N indicating it was assembled at the Neckarsulm factory

Is it a left hand drive model?

I eventually got someone at my local porsche garage to confirm what model it was for me as i was down there seeing how much it was going to cost me to get the car in a decent state.

He told me it was a 1983 Lux that originally had an 'A' number plate although it's a private plate now.
Now that's similar to what i had thought from all the info i got from here but still doesn't match up with the VIN number as it should be a 1984 one?
So since the VIN starts WPOZZZ94OE would that imply that it is both a Europe RoW and a USA/Canada model? [&:]

Can anyone tell me what size/rating tyres are correct for it as well please? it has all 4 original wheels with 195/65 R15 91H on the front which can't be right!

oh yeah it's a RHD model.

Leon

i just found it strange that checking on www.cantonia.com i got the following

WPO ZZZ = Europe RoW
WPO AAO = USA/Canada
94 = first two digits of model No. - Standard 944
95 = first two digits of model No. - 951 (944 Turbo)
Z = Europe RoW
O = USA/Canada
D= model year (1983)
E=1984 up to 1990 L (later ZL) 1991 ZM, 1992 ZN
N = Neckarsulm (build plant)
4 = last digit of model No. (944)
1 = last digit of model No. (951)

and wondered why the WPOZZZ would say europe row and the 940 say usa/canada when common sense would suggest that it should read WPOZZZ94Z or WPOAAO94O.

If it was built after the German national holiday (September or later) in 1983 then it'll be a 1984 model year car, but sould still have been registered in late 1983.

ORIGINAL: LeonB
it has all 4 original wheels with 195/65 R15 91H on the front

I can't find any info on the web just now confirming what the original size is but I really think you should put two of the wheels on the back [:D]

Found some [8D]

Take a look at the same Cantonia website and in the 'wheel offset' section it lists all the standard sizes. It seems you have a selection depending on the width of your wheels
