i looked at changing to something else earlier in the year (there's a post kicking about somewhere) however the cost saving was minimal and i decided not to take the risk; my car has always run on mobil 1 judging by the receipts and its doing ok.. if its not broke.. []
I think the previous thread showed some people using silkolene and castrol and things, so you will get lots of different answers. i think the common theme was that anything under 10w is too thin in these engines, most people going with 15wXX, which ties in nicely with the recommendations I had from my indy and the local OPC..

if you browse through it you'll see that the recommendation by oilman is fully synthetic 5w40. But like Ben, I can't help thinking that an older engine would benefit (leak less) from something a little more viscous especially if it's not being started up in very cold weather.

i also agree a heavier weight oil (esp in a higher mileage engine; mine just cracked 300,000 km at the weekend) is of benefit, and will help in the summer too when its hotter..

Well I'm about to find out about oilmans recommendation, as the service next week will see Silkolene 5W-40 put in. Currently have a slight leak with 15W-50, so am expecting a bit more on the floor. The quality of the Silkolene was what swayed me. Time will tell I suppose. Not a cheap switch though.
What I'm using as well (Silkolene Pro S).
Had leaks with Castrol RS and Magnatech. None with the Silkolene.
Totally understand the arguement, if what you use is fine with no problems why change. However, like Mr pg, i had considered changing to Silkolene for a better quality oil !! (although twice the price!) as this is what oilman appears to recommend. When i asked my inde' about what oil to use he replied, just use a good quality semi-synthetic !! My phylosophy is if there are better quality oils now available should we not move with the times? of course not to change for change sake, but change for long term longevity!
