What pads for track day and general use?

I seem to have shaken all the bugs out of the car (touch wood) and am booking some track days shortly.

What pads do you recommend for a 250 bhp 944 turbo (928 spec brakes). The ones I have on I am not happy with as I have driven cars that `seem` to bite and stop better. They also shed loads (and I mean loads) of dust all over the cars side.

On my Ginetta and Westfield I used EBC green stuff pads (no dust but they wore the discs out nicely) but they were lighter cars. Anyone used red or black stuff? In those days a lot of people also used Mintex

What pads are on your cars?

ps: the best stopper 944 I drove was a drilled/vented disc 951 with Porterfield ??? pads
 
Standard disks and OEM pads for me (Textar brand seem to last longer than Pagid), but we all have our favourites [:)]

I used EBC Greens a few years ago and they scored my good disks badly after one trackday[:mad:]. They have changed the formula since then and Tony 944Turbo uses them to good effect with no problems.

Make sure your fluid is fresh every year and if you can run a vent to the back of the disk this really helps. Do a full cool down lap without touching the brakes (2 laps on a short circuit or hot day) and try to coast to a halt in the paddock in 1st gear without touching the brake.

On this basis my front pads last 4 trackdays and 12k road miles, disks last 8 trackdays and 24k road miles.
 
I love my pagid orange/x-drilled setup. Yes, it's a bit dusty, but that's what powerwashers were invented for....
 
I am using performance friction 97 pads.

They have done about 60 laps of the ring this year, and still look like new.

They do squeel and grind a little but the performance is stunning.
 
Dave, I've been meaning to ask you about them since Husborne when we were talking about them. Where did you get them and what are they doing to your discs?

I'm pretty much of the opinion that you can never have too much stopping power and I know from experience that nothing spoils a good trackday more than uncertainty over your brakes (well, I guess 60 into the tyres would...) so even with big blacks I want to get the pads spot on.

I think I'm going to go with an adjustable proportioning valve so I can get the force to the back right even with the KWs and big blacks.
 
I got mine from Karl at Racers edge.

Over here they are at least 160+vat.

I paid $180 I think + $50 shipping, but I ordered some other stuff as well.

As for the discs, they were new too, and they still look pretty good.

The only downside is dust, it does produce quite a lot, and it's difficult to clean off. A small price to pay I think.
 
I always found the standard pads worked OK, but would always end up vibrating very badly.

However careful I was I never seemed to avoid it. However, with the race pads I don't take anything like the same amount of care at all and they are still operate great [:D]

On the basis as above that you can't have too much stopping power I have just ordered a set of Peformance Friction 97 pads (all 4) and an AP adjustable proportioning valve.

My concern is that they will be a little ineffective when cold but everyone with experience of them says they are OK. Big blacks with only OK pads should perform pretty well I expect which should mean I don't rear-end anyone on the motorway [&:]
 
I did not find them too bad cold.

In fact they are nice cold, as they dont make all the noise [:)]

I had that experience last week, I was testing my boost enhancer after having problems with over boost in 4th gear at 4500rpm (work out how fast I was going from that) and what was a clear stretch turned soon turned out to be populated by a slip road - .......... fortunately I stopped.
 


With 928GTS callipers, you can run standard pads all day long without fear of overheating.

AP adjustable proportioning valve.

On my Westy and Ginetta I overcame overbraking on the rears by downgrading the rear pads to halfords specials to prevent overbraking on the rears. I never had to introduce a bias valve, mind you I did fit brake bias bars and twin master cylinders

Have you tried less agressive pads on the rears?
 
I'm expecting to increase braking to the rears to compensate for the extra braking at the front and reduction in dive/weight transfer with the coilovers, but maybe I'm wrong and I need to reduce it due to compensate for increased pedal travel to push the bigger pistons out. Either way I want to get maximum braking from both ends without upsetting the balance rather than try to make the rears do nothing.

928 GTS calipers are "big blacks", your 928 calipers are "reasonably big blacks".
 
I'll leave then adjuster alone then and see how it goes. Did you use the same pads all round, Andrew?
 
I didn't use any additional cooling other than the standard M030 ducts

I have ducts that exit from the plastic wheel arch liner, are these what you are talking about or is there another one that directs from there onto the inner disc?
 
There should also be an curved alluminium plate to "flow" the air to the disc centre.
