Im about to get a sat nav unit and there seems to be loads of choice??
I quite fancy the tom tom go 910, as its c/w bluetooth hands free, "safety" camera deatector and seems pretty wll spec'd.
The drawback seems to be its bulk, (I will use it in a carrera 3.2). Originaly I quite liked a flater Garmin (dont know the model number). As it coulod easily be used when walking. (another use I would quite like.)
Any expeiences or opinions would be most welcome... what would you recomend or not...

Cheers Adam

I recently purchased the 3rd generation Road Angel Navigator 7000, so far it has worked fine took me to several locations without any drama and the camera detection is the best

This unit is quite flat and fits nicely into my 3.2

Ive got the original Road Angel Navigator. No hands free but the Camera warning Screen showing your true MPH is just brilliant. And contrary to what Halford try and tell you has a full postcode search facility. I have a bluetooth phone with a Sony Ericson hand free speaker that clips to the sun visor and can be swopped from car to car and no stray leads

Got Tom Tom 5,

Of all the sat nav systems I've ever seen or used, this has got to be my favorite.

You can even use it as pace notes in the 3D mode :)

I have the TomTom910 and it has been excellent. I bought it and immediately went to Italy were it got me to all my destinations including dealing with roadworks diversions and my vague descriptions. The phone handsfree is good and the MP3 player is only limited by the speaker. It is triangular which works well on a dashboard but might not be so good in a pocket. The speed cameras work and are directional which my PDA tomtom3 wasn't. The only downside is no radar as I know to my cost . This lulls you into a false sense of security until you come across a mobile unit! The 910 also has the USA maps included. The deluxe pack with 2 mounts is a good deal at £290 .

I've got Tom Tom Navigator 6 on my phone ( Nokia N95 ) - works really well and has camera warnings and road speed. Requires separate GPS Blue tooth device ( £25 off net ) but obviously you dont have to have phone and satnav unit - 1 box does all.

If you want to talk about it mail me direct.

Thanks for the info guys... the 910 is still my preference but Im going to get some more feedback from users of it before buying one.

Hi Adam,

well, just taken delivery of my TomTom Go 910. After a small initial software problem (which TomTom helpdesk fixed first time on an 0845 number... AND called ME back....) it all works just fine. In fact I am totally impressed. By using Google Checkout I saved a further £10. Recently bought a new Apple MacBook pro from the Apple Refurb shop so saw no reason not to do the same with TomTom. It arrived brand new, fully boxed as a factory refurb. Total price including courier delivery and VAT was £259 from TotalPDA. The Bluetooth is great as is the so called Safety camera stuff. I reckon my Snooper may take a back seat. But, like all thinks technical, it's all very personal and for some I fully accept that the Road Angel option is their preference. Cheers Dave

Cheers you do inspire me with confidence - as you say its personal pref. but I wanted to see what people felt having used them, will post my thoughts when I get it (nect month for my birthday.)
Thanks again

I have the 910. It is rather bulky, especially when you don't want to leave it in the car and take it with you which I always do.
You will not need the remote control in the 911 as the dash is so small compared to modern euro boxes.

Nathan does the 910 perform well? Any experience of use would be great.

I think it is excellent. It is quite difficult/fiddly to remove from the windscreen mount though for when you want to take it with you.

Never had any problems at all.

I bought a 910 before going on a two week road trip in California in March. It performed astonishingly well. There's nothing individually ground breaking in it in terms of technologies it boasts, but it's the way it combines them all together that's amazing. Sat Nav, points of interest, phone integration, hands-free calling, voice synthesis, live traffic re-routing etc. Agree the bulk is the only thing against it.

The voice synthesis is a blast. Not only does it read text messages and obscure road names aloud to you, but you can make it say anything you like when in the proximity of chosen points of interest. I'm ashamed to say mine says "Can we go to McDonald's pleeeease!!" when within 300 yards of said "restaurants." Equally you could make it say "Very nice, but soooo ostentatious" when passing a Ferrari dealership, not that any of us would be so childish or prejudiced... Better yet, it even gives you the phone number of the POI in question to let you phone them up to pre-order your Big Mac or F430 Spider hands-free before you get there. Nice.

For those that don't need the bundled USA & Canada maps or space for loads of MP3s (Yes, it's an MP3 player too...) or Photographs the 910 provides, the 710 does all the same tricks for less money. (Although a friend of mine ran his 710 out of space when installing an update, but I suspect he may have some MP3s loaded)

I have TomTom 5 on a PDA too, which benefits from a bigger screen. The only thing wrong with my copy is that if I let the battery go flat, i.e. don't use it for three weeks or so, I have to re-install the software which is a bit of a pain. It sometimes has a falling-out witht the separate sattelite receiver too, which can be a bit "techie" to fix. I've had a NavMan too - nowhere near as easy to use as the TomToms - particularly for the congenitally fat-fingured.
