What shoes do you use?

The mothership is going in for a service tomorrow to the Porsche Centre in Kennington.

Firstly anybody have any experience with said venue, chap is a specialist and came highly recommended to me, and appears to be keenly priced.

Secondly I am having some new tyres fitted to her. She deserves some rears and I was just curious as to what brand you guys use, and the whole merits of 'n' rated etc.

She is a 91 turb and currently running Falkens, the fronts have only done a couple of thou and seem good.. but I have been told its best to get 4 new of the same rather than just replace the rears as will make handling better (tyres currently not a mathced pair) I am gonna jump in for some conti sport contacts as have been offered a fair price from the guy.. I plan to mainly drive weekends, at a spiritied pace and may dabble in a track day or three when the weather perks up..

Thanks in advance guys

Charlie

Never heard of that place, are they new?

N rating is where Porsche test a specific brand of tyre for their cars. Porsche only did this once for 944s back in the late '80s and that tyre is no longer made so it is totally irrelavent to our cars. Current N rated tyres will have been tested on Boxsters and 911s.

It's always best to have matching tyres all round but our cars are so well balanced it is not that important. I don't think I ever have in 9 years and have had no problems. If you are happy with the Falkens then get the same again. There are plenty of tyre threads if you use the search function but everyone has their own favourite - mine are Kumhos though most like Toyo T1R/S and Goodyear Eagles

I got Toyo Proxes T1Rs on my car and they are fantastic only had them on the car for 3 weeks now and they have made a massive difference.

As per RC18B we ran Toyo T1-R on our S2 and they suited it very well. Not the stiffest sidewalls on the market, but this proved to be a huge plus for me as the previous-owner-fitted Yoko AVS tramlined like children-without-fathers.

I've now stuck T1-R on the RX8 and they are a massive improvment over the OEM fit Bridestone RE040.

In saying that

OptionB : I've heard good comments about the Falken FK452. If it's this particular make and more specifically "model" of tyre on the front, I'd be inclined to put the same on the rear and save a few spondulas.

OptionC : Goodyear now have a new flagship Assymetric Eagle F1 tyre, so the GSD3 varient has become "2nd" in their range. Prices have tumbled enormously as a result. To the extent that I plan to shod the Scoob with these in the near future.

Macthed pair on an axle is very important. Matched all around the car is much less important, I'd say.

I moved from Conti Sport Contacts to the Falkens on the rear, and would rate the Falkens over the CSC's. (Cheaper to boot.) More progressive breakaway, giving a better feel and more predictable handling, meaning you can go faster and be in more control. The CSC's were good at gripping, but let go in a bit of a rush and I was always a bit wary of them. Nothing to worry about, but not as good as the Falkens.

Can't comment on any other tyres.

I've just had a set of the latest Falkens fitted (can't remember the exact type) and the car is a lot happier than it was on the N3 Michelins. Mind you, if you put those next to Duncan Goodhew you couldn't have told them apart.

Agree with the above about Toyo's etc. I used to love them so much I had 3 sets of T1-S's. At the moment I have Michelin pilot exalto PE-2 on 17" rims on the Saab daily driver. For me this is the most impressive tyre I have tried yet, utterly brilliant in every way grip and braking both wet and dry is mind bogglingly good (remember the 9-5 is a barge so these tyres must be really good). Unfortunately you can only get them in 17" sizes or bigger suitable for a 44. I might get a set and put em on me 17" for road and wet track driving, because I might have to stick to 16" and stock size A048 M's or similar so I can do some local sprints next year.

I've got Continental Conti-sports. Not a particularly impressive tyre in terms of sporty grippy feel, but a very competent all-round road tyre. Had them on for 3.5yrs and about 18k miles including a few trackdays now and they look untouched. Had Toyo's on my previous wheels and I seem to remember they felt much grippier and sportier. Might try them whenever I can wear out these bloomin' Conti's.

I have Bridgestone RE720s on my '87 Turbo... Very happy with them....! Mine gets the odd blast but its mainly for sunday/occasional use...I like a tyre which gives me a nice grip/comfort/safety/life level without being too racy....! The price of the 944 tyre has come down and theres a lot more choice nowadays as most "family" hacks use 16"

Interesting. The RE720 transformed every VW Golf I put them on - I swore by them on that type of car. Big central band, so great steering accuracy, but they seemed to grip brilliantly in the wet as well and lasted for a good long time to boot.

I considered them for my S2, but no-one seemed to have any experience of them with a RWD/better balanced car, so I went for the Falkens instead.

Maybe I'll be back with the bridgestones when I need some new fronts.

Hi guys,

Looks like I made the wrong choice then. Ah well, was offline for a few days and didnt read the forum, tyres now fitted and im picking it up tomorrow.. neigh mind.

At least I know they will last for a while. Got four and hopefully will make an improvement over the worn rears that were on it.

Also worrying the chap found the dizzy cap wasnt on properly [&:] and the rotor arm wasnt working correctly. Really odd as I didnt think it drove badly at all.

Cheers

Charlie

Are there different compounds for T1-R ?
Mine did improve a bit after a few thousand miles but they're still dangerous to the point I resigned myself to fitting back a set of T1-S ... [8|]
