What size tyres for 16x7j alloys?

Hi fellas,

I have just bought a set of alloys for my 944 lux (1986). They are 16"x7j currently with no tyres.

I need to buy some tyres (and then I will be taking them to be rufurbed and fitted [:D] )

I have tried using the search function on this site but it seems very hit and miss. Im basically trying to find out what tyres would be recommended.

Should I get wider tyres for the rear even though the wheels are the same width for example? Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers

Neil.

Different tyre manufacturers will have different optimum tyre sizes subject to rim width.

Your best bet is establish what the rolling diameter of your current tyres are and choose the profile relative to width that matches.

Porsche suggest 205/55 on 7 inch rims. If the tyre manufacturer allows you could go to 225/50.

I would keep to the same front and back with the same rim width. 944's arguably handle better that way any way.

Cheers for that! Looking at a few wheel websites it looks like the rears could comfortably accomodate 215/55's.Am I right in thinking that the instrument for determining your speed is hooked up to the front wheels as opposed to the rears?

depends on the year of the car.. IIRC the early cars speedo was driven off the front wheels.. not sure when this changed but I suspect when the oval dash models arrived.. 1986. I'm sure someone here will be able to confirm or say otherwise[:)][:)]

Yes oval dash have the gearbox driven speedo, the earlier ones are front wheel driven.

On mine ('83) Ihave 215/60x15s all round which feel pretty good.
