do you recon these were knackered thinking of complaining to blaukpunt [:)]

Some old Boston Acoustics ones, which sound OK. I am thinking about trying to fit some small components in there sometime, but there are more important things on the project list at the mo ...

Bear in mind that a good amplifier will make more difference than good speakers. A small old-school rockford thingy has taken up residence in my boot, and has made a big difference!

I fitted some JBL 6x4 speakers in there, two-piece component (mid and tweeter). The ones I went for are quite big and chunky, and look good uncovered. I padded the holes and surrounding door area with adhesive-backed sound deadener and then left the meshes off. My rear speakers are the standard old ones, and I have an Alpine amplifier fitted vertically in the boot, inside the space saver spare wheel, with an 8" Dayton subwoofer and custom-built box slotted into the rear storage cubby under the boot carpet flap.

None of this would have been worth doing if I hadn't invested in a good head unit as well, so there's a Becker Grand Prix fitted to power it all. I reckon the front speakers and the amp made the most difference, but the rear sub is what keeps the sound nice and balanced even when bad weather and road noise build up outside.

I have some JBL 6x4 speakers as well model number GTO 6426e which sound very good,i have also used infinity in the 944 as well which i would recomend !!

Nice one fellas ill look at those this afternoon and think as you say make sure there padded out thought about the infinity ones yesterday

ORIGINAL: random hero

I have some JBL 6x4 speakers as well model number GTO 6426e which sound very good,

I also have these following recommendations on the forum. They fit perfect and sound good to me. They are always appearing on Ebay

Slightly off topic, but can anyone tell me if the standard rear speakers a coaxial 2 way design as standard? I noticed mine were when the car was stripped down and was a bit surprised (I don't think the original fronts were). Its rather academic as the foam surrounds had perished, but I was just curious. I found an Alpine pair of drivers lying around here so those are going in instead.

peter the rear one are just atraight cone speakers took my originals out last night they looked well 22 yrs old

Cheers, so mine have been swapped then. Must have been a while ago for the foam to go (but come to think of it it must have been more than the 10 years I've owned the car for [&:])

Those are the same ones I have. Great wee speakers.

Have you managed to fit grills/meshes over the top of them? Mine wouldn't fit at all, but luckily I kind of like the way they look bare.

Digio, it says that they do not come with a grill. are you going to leave them 'bare' or will the standard grills fit over them?

I am tempted nut want to keep the standard look as opposed to the chavved up look!

Nick,
There is a picture of the speaker from the side and they look flat so should fit as a direct replacement with the original grille. I fitted (and have three more pairs) of other JBL speakers that needed a bit of grinding doing to them before the grilles (early type) would fit flush. I must say it improved the sound quality over the 10 year old Kenwoods that I had before. They are now in 'The Shed' as the speakers in that were original Blaupunkt.
Cheers,

Those JBL things look interesting ... I have contemplated them before, and wondered ...

Thanks for the recommendation!

Oli.

appletonn dont carve anything mate straight replacements fit just so under the front grill np as for the rears doesnt matter they realy are much better than the other JBL, prob the best for just a 4 inch speaker ive heard

Paul

I've got the JBL ones up front as well. I'm not 100% happy with them. I find the treble a bit too harsh and they can't kick out as much bass as the standard ones I had in before. I have to turn the treble down a notch or two due to the harshness. The sound quality is good though, just lacking in bass. I had no problems with the sound quality of my originals. I only replaced the fronts as one of the originals decided to give up the ghost.
