What stereo to have?

Hi everyone

Just recently purchased my first boxster which I'm picking up next week. It's got an old sony single cd player head unit and I wanted to ask is it worth trying to pick up an old porsche original becker sound system off ebay or go for a nice new style head unit from Alpine, pioneer etc etc. Not sure weather to keep it original or go for a new look.

Your comments will be much appreciated.

I had the same thing and toyed with the idea of buying the original head unit. In the end I decided to go for a new Becker MP3 player to keep in-line with the original styling......very good unit too

Thanks for the comments, I'm still thinking weather to keep it original or go for a flashy Alpine or pioneer.

totally up to you fella
are you really into your music or is the stereo just something to have on it the background as you drive around?
why do you want to change the HU and how far do you want to go with upgrading the stereo?

The Becker CDR22 is actually a very good quality head unit, both build and sound quality. Its not flashy in looks or sound, its pretty neutral in fact.

The Becker Grand Prix units look close to original, and give you more features such as bluetooth or ipod connections

Beyond that, you can get as flashy as you like - i put a Pioneer DEH4900 inot my commuting shed, its a good sound with ipod direct connection via rear cable - its just a bit chav with the blue and red display and flashing text/lights (so ideal in a Golf lol!! )

I think I just want something to make the car look original but also have good sound quality. I think I'm going to go for the becker grand prix as it looks original but has the latest features, can't go wrong.

Here's the Grand Prix in a 944...

Thanks for the pic, I think I'm going to go for the grand prix, it looks original for the car and still has the features of a modern stereo.

Go for a becker traffic pro 7820 it looks identical to the original fit and gives you sat nav too. Porsche did similar by offering a Porsche badged 7820 as Techquipment only the Porsche version was over 1K. Good used traffic pro's more like 200 quid on ebay and you should just about be able to get one nos for about £350

Thanks for that advice, I didn't realise you could get them that cheap, I think Im going to look into that.

Sorry for hijacking this thread but davej_anderson & Laurence Gibbs you mention the Becker Traffic Pro and buying it second hand. I have one of these and Ive fitted it BUT I dont know how to fit the GPS sender unit. I have looked through the opening where the stereo goes and it looks fraught with lost skin to go through that route to locate the sender, but I cant see any where else I can put my hand to stick it. Damn these German engineers! Its all pack neatly away!

Does anyone have any ideas how to fit the GPS sender?

Thanks for the help Dave - once you have completed this work instruction it will be invaluable to the forum. And from what I can see its in pretty damn good shape now!
