What Temp does your Temperature gauge read?

A common question asked by new 944 owners is ' where should the needle be on my temp gauge because the manual makes no sense' ? I thought it would be interesting to collect readings from members own cars. Take a look at the two pictures below taken from the Factory Manual and translate what temperature your gauge reads under normal use.

I' ve allowed multiple posts if you have more than one car [8|]

Mine goes up and stays at 80 degress not seen is go higher than that all summer. I do have alot more coolant than water. Maybe that effects the temp.

I had two 944s and covered about 70k mles in them. I don't remember ever seeing the temperature gauge at all!

I think that one can only see a 944 temperature gauge (at least in an early "yelow dial" car) if onw is:

a. less than 1,2m or more than 2,3m tall;
b. upside-down
c. psychic; or
d. had one's steering wheel stolen.

Mine is the same, think i will get a new thermostat fitted. HAs anyone tried it themself, as usual the bolts will be solid, really have to be carefull not to snap the heads off, dam that alu corrosion.

I've never done this - I paid to have mine done [:D] but since then I have heard it is relatively easy to do (if you can get the old one out)

The thermostat attaches into the water pump right where the large bottom hose of the radiator goes into it. There is a good guide to draining the system and changing the thermostat in the Garage Shop Manual at http://www.clarks-garage.com/

Bert Gear (the 944 register tech rep) can supply the thermoststat and has recommended before to simply punch a hole through the old stat to destructively remove it as the retaining ring is often seized solid.

My car seems to site around 70deg and only rises in stationalry traffic, when it hits 80 the fans come on. So if they are ment to come one at 100 it would suggest that the gauge is not working properly. Makes sence as my fuel gauge only reads 3/4full after i have just filled up!!

Just replaced my rad. fan switch (£18)

Switching temperature is stamped on the bottom.

Fan 1 comes on at 86c

Fan 2 is just over 100c

944turbo - check no.1 fan or replace your switch.

That sounds wrong - have you got your air con switched on? Just had my thermostats replaced and it sits at 80 all the time unless stuck in traffic then will creep up to 100ish when both fans cut it and then it drops back to 80. Same as my previous car.
Do you have an oval dash car or square dash?
