What Throttle Body do I Need for my 986 Boxster 2.7l from 2000?

Hey guys, I've just bought a 2000 986 Boxster but I believe the throttle body has broken in some way. It drove fine for a 100 mile drive and then 2 hours later I started the car back up and it had a rough idle and wouldn't rev past 2000rpm when moving unless the MAF sensor was disconnected.
We changed the MAF sensor but that didn't fix the problem so I had it transported to a specialist garage near me and they have done an initial diagnosis which they believe to be a problem with the throttle body.
Due to the low cost of the car to buy initially, I felt it was unnecessary to spend £1700 on a brand new part and the garage have also recommended that I could shop around for a second hand one to put into the car.
Absolutely loving driving it and i can't wait to get it back on the road.

Any help with this would be massively appreciated!

Thank you!
Alex

Hi Alex,

You should be able to find the throttle body part number on the item fitted, but could also have a look on this site under Boxster:

Thinking get another check / opinion on throttle body and see if you can swop parts with a known working Boxster as can expensively replace parts and not solve problem. Also from experience can get multiple and differing diagnostic codes which may not pinpoint the cause.

Had intermittent rough running and limited revs on our 986 2.7 a few times over the years and different cause each time as follows:
1. Air intake pipe was loose allowing in to much air without being detected by MAF - check the fit and tighten clamps of pipework from air filter to throttle body,
2. Oil Air Separator fault allowed oil into the fuel body and pipework - removed / clean pipework ran fine after clean, then replaced Oil Air Separator,
3. Coil pack fault and these vary with weather and engine temperature - changed all coil packs (change plugs at same time),
4. MAF failure and disconnecting MAF did not always make a difference - changed for new Bosch MAF and fine after that.

Hope this helps

Alex,

As Marc says a rough idle and limited revs can be caused by a number of things, all of which are worth checking-out. Dodgy injectors and VarioCam issues can’t be discounted either.

I believe that your MY2000 986 has an electronic throttle, in which case it would be sensible to check that pedal actuation is translating correctly to throttle opening. Or is that the reason you’re thinking of swapping-out the throttle body?
