What To do ! please help

Hi all
i have just bought my first porsche and it is a 924 1986

now it has been sitting up since 2008 . so first thing i done today was check to see if it had oil in and yes it did . so then i connected it to a new battery to check the electrics . and they work. so what should i next do ??

need like a list on how to get it started and the safe way of doing it ?

Blimey ... small question ... but it probably needs a big answer!

Without seeing the car in the metal, or knowing its history, it's hard to know what to advise. Is the radiator full of coolant? Is the oil level OK? is there petrol in it? (The petrol is probably ancient, and would be better drained and refreshed, but that is probably a big job). Have you checked over all the obvious things like HT leads, spark plugs, air filter, etc? If you have, I can't see any reason why you can't try and fire it up. If you can get it started, I'd certainly change the oil and filter before I ran for any time or distance.

Oh ... is this a 924 or a 924S? If it's an S, then check that the cam and balance belts look OK too.
 
At m y 1986 my thiinking is that it would be the 2.5 litre, in which case the cost and time of changing all the belts and rollers before you even attempt to turn it over, (which you should do intially by hand using the crackshaft pulley for two complete turns to check for blocking or hydraulic locking) far outweighs the cost of replacing five or six bent valves if it lets go. It's been idle for the whole of the rccommended material life of the belts so they would be the first thing you would change as a mateer of course so remember that 28.4 grams of prevention is better than 454.4 grams of cure ( AKA an ounce of preventon is better than a lb of cure). I would go so far as to say that even if it is a 1985 build 1986 registered 2.0 (my 944 is 1991 build 1992 reg) it would be prudent to change the belt even though from my experience the 2.0 NON-TURBO is a "safe" engine owing to the valve cut outs in the piston and the fact that the piston does not come all the way up the bore. If you visit the 944 forum regarding the 2.5 litre you will get the same advice. Who am I? The 924 technical advisor (t/a) check my signature. If you do this recommended work then your introduction to Porsche ownership should be a happy one and not the nightmare it could be. The S is a great little car and Porsche recognised its potential to out perform its wide arched sibling, so they knocked 10 bhp of the 2.5 when they put it in the 924 presumably to keep 944 owners happy, until they introduced the Le Mans which had 160. I think around about the time they introduced the 190 hp 16v engine in the 944 both 8v 944 and 924s run out models shared the 160 hp engine but it wasn't for very long. Happy to offer advice if and when you need it.
