what to do...

944 LIL

New member
I took LIL for a bit of a blast at Bedford Autodrome - fantastic day - well right up to the moment I lost oil pressure. The engine is now knackered...

Choice seems to be
1. buy new engine and replace
2. sell for spares

I need to make a choice cos I don't have the space to keep it indefinitely. Option 1 still leaves the list of things I still need to fix - so sort of feels like good money after bad. Option 2 is just depressing.

Thoughts

ps - I'm skint

I know its not very 'politically correct' round here to say it but if LIL is the 86 lux in your sig , I'd buy another one if you want another. My reasoning being they are just so cheap to come by at the moment and in good nick too. Sorry about the mishap, have you any idea why you engine went pop.

Regards Mas

Colin, sorry to hear the bad news but if LIL is of any sentimental value, do not break, wait untill you have funds and replace engine otherwise you will regret the decision to lose her.

My 87 S engine gave way a couple of years ago, cam chain broke smashed head not nice, big descion like you, but no way could I let her go, managed to get a replacement engine from wales had my indie replace and new clutch fitted whilst he was at it, ok bill altogether was £2700 more than the car was worth on paper but not to me!

To have her sitting around where she normally does waiting for the funds to replace the engine surely you wil not lose out? if you break her thats it gone forever.

Hope it works out the best for you

Regards

Andy

someones selling a lux engine with 95k miles on tipec for £150;

http://www.forums.tipec.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=9679

i'd keep it running

Was just going to mention the TIPEC one for sale [:D]

Also there are a couple of running ones on Ebay. You should be able to sort it out for around £300 if you are willing to fit it yourself, plus you can change the belts etc easily with the new lump out

Hi Colin, sorry to hear this. Being brutally honest my opinion would be one of two options:

1 - If the rest of the car is in really good condition, rust-free etc., then it needs to have a new engine. It'll be a lot cheaper than getting another car. I see so many it's hard to remember them all, but isn't yours an exceptionally good one?

2 - If the rest of the car is going to need money thrown at it then it might be easier to let it go. If you were thinking that there were going to be big bills looming anyway or you can see the road through the sills then buying a car that's had loads of work done already would be more sensible.

Bear in mind that the cost of the engine isn't the only thing. You will probably be doing all the service items, belts, water pump and possibly a clutch whilst it's being fitted. At least it'll be a good few years before anything needs doing again, with luck.

i have 6 engines currently that are available and i am just north of peterborough. Not allowed to advertise on here but hopefully this is helping a fellow enthusiast out in his hour of need so the moderators wont remove.

Course not, there's a big difference between an offer, even from a specialist like yourself, and a blatant advert or plug. Offer away! [:)]

Colin,

Sorry to hear your news.

I'd say you should replace the engine and keep the old girl on the road, but that's just an opinion. She was a nice one, and I do recall how much you like her.

Oli.

I'm in the same position, Bedford doesnt seem to like 944's, or vice versa!

What failed, Mine was crank/conrods and bearings, top end is still like new.
