What to expect from PEC?

They will give you a brief where you can choose what you want to do. If you’d like to maximise your fast driving technique then the instructor will do that with you. If you want to experience launch control and the maximum braking capabilities of the car they’ll do that with you as well. If it’s your first trip I’d suggest doing a bit of everything And if you’re talking a guest with you, you can share the driving. I’d also recommend doing the Silverstone museum as well.

Dan.

Hi
I have a PEC session next week and am driving a 4.0 GTS PDK (own car is 2.5 GTS and they have none on their fleet)
what can I expect or do - any recommendations if there are optional things that I can do?

Thanks
Paul

Dan - thanks for the info.

Unfortunately going solo - couldnt get a dog sitter…..

But quite fancy trying launch control in their car :), but also any handling courses, doesn’t have to be too high speed, but understanding what the car is capable of (or probably where my limit is as it is probably way below that of the car)

Play on the ice hill and kick-plate (‘skid pan’), also the low friction surface is good to experience just how much adhesion the car has at its limits.

+1

Depending on your previous experience, it's a very good way of experiencing lift-off oversteer at low speed and under very safe conditions and then practicing how the car itself can prevent you spinning if you don't lift off.

Just another thought. If you don't know already (depends if you have read the manual) on the low friction surfaces it's a good opportunity to learn how to turn off eg PSM and what that actually does. Last year I found myself unexpectedly driving around in heavy snow on a cross-country journey and trying to turn round in a snow-blocked narrow country lane. The car was at right angles to the lane, the front was a few inches from a steep grassy bank and the rear wouldn't reverse up a dropped kerb into a field entrance because it was too slippery. I was on a hill with the road sloping quite steeply downwards on the driver's side. I literally got stuck across the road. Traction control was great (even in reverse) but prevented the car from going anywhere. By winding on full lock and turning off PSM in reverse, I was able to get the whole car to slide a few feet sideways down the hill to where the field gateway was level with the road. I was then able to reverse into the gateway and turn round, re-engaging PSM to continue safely on my snowy journey, with no damage done. This was just applying things I learnt at PEC years ago in completely different circumstances!

Generally speaking as well the PEC is a lovely shiny clean environment, the staff are friendly, the food is great (and free), the table service is polite and attentive, there are a few nice cars in display inside and out and on a good weather day the view of Silverstone circuit is great from the roof terrace, which you can enjoy inbetween your driving sessions.

and the driving consultants are very good.

Oh and don’t forget there is a wall full of lights to test you reactions. You will need a good back though!

I’m there again in about 4 weeks time and I always look forward to a day of good driving, good fun and a lovely lunch.

To update on this - had a great day today.

After a couple of laps of handling 1 circuit, I did the kick plate followed by ice hill. Great experience with both, and did some split grip studd on kick plate area.

Then some more time on handling 1 then handling 2 and launch control / heavy braking.

Thoroughly enjoyed myself and was incredibly surprised on a few occasions - namely the launch control OMG how fast these cars accelerate from standstill and just how much you can stand on the brakes - that may sound strange, but the opportunity to do both of those in a controlled and safe environment was useful.

My instructor was really helpful and patient….!!!

Did I notice a difference in sound between F4T and F6 - yes initially but then focus was on the driving and to be honest it wasn’t really something I picked up on Food was lovely, all the team there really helpful.

One final thing - they had a GT4RS there - only saw it as we walked past - beautiful looking thing!
