What tyres would you choose for a 993 Carrera?

Criteria for choice is

Road driving only with no track days
Mostly dry weather driving
Preference is for grip and drivability
Wear rate and noise level not important
Cost not important
Road legal tyre (ie OK with the insurance company)
All four tyres to be replaced so no matching issues

Choices are

a/ Michelin Pilot Sport 2
b/ Pirelli Rosso N4
c/ Pirelli Assimetrico N3
d/ Continental Sport Contact N2
e/ Any other

Any personal experiences with the above and reasons for your choice appreciated.

Regards.

Ian,

I don't do track days, and my C4 is fitted with Conti's - N2 rated as in your post.

I have to say that they are a fine all-round tyre with good wear rate and excellent wet weather grip.

Chris

Thanks Chris.

Almost matching cars - I have 1996 C2 Coupe Midnight Blue / Marble Grey

I should refine my criteria slightly to say "Preference is for grip and drivability in the dry" as I am happy to compromise on driving slower in the wet.

How do you find the Conti's in the dry?

Ian.

found the latest Goodyear F1 GSD3 a fine tyre that's lasts forever ! wins all the car mag tyre tests..

dont know if it N approved ?

so is there an annual list from Porsche to it's N tyre approved tyres ?

you don't mention size 16/17/18, but P0 Assimetrico and S02s are both good on 18s

Cheers, Maurice

18s probably, but I have both 17 and 18 inch wheels at the moment. I thought S02s had been superceeded by S03s which don't seem to have such good feedback.

Anybody got experience with the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres?

Ian.

I found this survey during my research on the internet. I have no idea how good it is but it is interesting reading.

I am not sure where the ranking order comes from but the performence ratings are of interest.

based on my experience of tyres...

Pirelli PZero Rosso = very very good grip esp in the dry but average life..

Michelin Pilot Sports = very good grip in the dry & not too bad in the wet..not quite the life expectancy of the Goodyear.. but I've only had a limited run of these co cant comment further

Bridgestone S03 = good grippy in the dry & wet + nice rim protector but 1st half of the tyres life seems to go in about a few thousand k's but the later half lasts MUCH longer but obviously with lower tread... out performed by Goodyear F1

Goodyear F1 = very good grip in the Wet & expectional life .. a tad hard so dry grip is average but unsure whether Goodyear ever bothered with Porsche approval ?

Conti-sports = an average tyre with a good life but too hard & IIRC not to highly rated by those car mags......

HI
I run my 993 on Conti sport N2 rating and just replaced the rears at a cost of £129 per tyre..but was informed Conti no longer make this size in N2 rating any more.

I Have Pirreli Rosso's on my 2S

very good in the dry,,,,, not great in the wet,,, and dont like the track in the wet either,,,,

rears wear quicly compared to fronts which is probably the same for most...

very little tyre squeal even on track compared to the likes of Mitchelen.......
