What will the next Cayman be like?

Sadly the new cayman will probably be predictable to a fault, in the time honoured Porsche fashion ... a slightly bigger car based on the 991 platform, a small rise in power, more gadgetry and a higher price. I'm sure you can assume its place in the model heirachy will be unchanged. Of more interest to me will be the rumoured flat four "Cayman lite", although I doubt if it will be quite the small, light simple car it ought to be.

What John said... Plus you are really going to have to be an anorak to tell the difference in looks between old and new.

Me too, trying to ring a bi of truth out of the "Baby Boxster" leaks hoping for news on a small Cayman. So many "Artists Impressions" of the BB it reminds me of the original Boxster concept and how different the 986 was to make it practical. Probably a lot of smoke screens! Yes, I am cynical.

I wonder if Porsche are watching Mazda? For 20 years Mazda have made the MX5, the worlds best selling sports car, and predictably with every iteration it has got bigger, heavier, more powerful, etc, etc, just like every other car. It is rumoured however that new Mk 4 MX5 due shortly is going to buck this trend, and go back to being the same size as the original MX5, under 1000 kg, and powered by a new highly efficient 1.5 litre engine. If Mazda really can pull this off, I hope it starts a whole new trend of downsizing. I may even trade in my cherished original MX5 for a new one. I really wish Porsche would do the same. All their cars are now too big, too powerful, too complex and too expensive. Good cars though the new 991 and the new Cayman will no doubt be, they seem a long way from the classic Porsche ethos of light, simple and agile. I'm not holding my breath though!

Boxster was said to be inspired by the 550, but engine position and rough shape only. If the new baby cars could only be nearer the original but modern.

Interesting. I had read about all small roadster coming but not that it also might spawn a coupe. It is rumoured that the next Cayman may get the rumoured turbocharged flat four in its second generation around 2015. Who knows, maybe the smaller and larger cars will get a flat 4. Spyderman. I think there is some possibility in what you say. If Porsche struggle to position it well, they may inadvertently kill it off themselves, but i'm thinking after the next model. Does Porsche take any input from owners and/or owner's clubs with regards to future models? I'm not talking about having a seat at the table with the strategists, but do they do any sort of market research directly with current owners that anyone is aware of, apart from Inside Track?

I'm sure it will be great regardless. Have to say I am impressed with my 06 CS. Havent tried the new model but I suspect extra 25bhp isnt even noticeable in every day use. Guess the new one will exceed the 316bhp of the current model. Wonder if a new cayman will be below 200g/km co2 ?

Yeah the new one will probably have its power and performance somewhere around that of the Cayman S Black Edition / Cayman R
