What would 20K buy?

Ill leave it to the 993 boys but IMO a Left Hooker , L Plate Car 2 or a RHD High Mil private sale at that price - traders no chance unless its a real dog.

If I wanted to spend £20k on a Porsche it would be either:

1. For everyday use - I'd seek out the very best Boxster 'S' I could find.

2. As a special/long term classic - I'd try to find an exceptional, low mileage, late (G50), 3.2 Coupe.

With you on that oliver - 20k currently for a 993 - the above will IMO get you a far nicer example

Two months ago I looked at a 1995 (pre varioram) C4 in basalt black with 120k miles - on a general car dealer's forecourt. FSH by way of stamps in the book but no paperwork to back that up. As I recall it was marked up for £19,500. Not for me without the paperwork but I think the price was fair.

A firend is looking for a new motor and has about £20K to spend. What are his options?

As an aside, anyone reading the "price crash" thread on the 996 forum should read the "Auction Watch - Power Crazed Germans" bit at the foot of the page Robert has attached above. Someone's lost £70k on a Merc CL600 in 3 years!! Makes Porsche ownership seem eminently sensible.....

You can get a good high milage RHD 993 C2 for £20k. I know of someone who has - full service history (mostly at OPC and more recently with a reputable independant specialist) with all the receipts and absolutely immaculate, HPI clear etc - although it was white. Can't remember the year or milage but he paid £20k for it. Shame he's a bit of a boy racer and has since put it into the A38 central reservation. They are probably few and far between but they are out there.

For £20K you can get a brilliant sorted 964 - a proper Porsche - with all the work done and years of motoring left in it.

Think richard is about right. 20k is too little at present to buy a decent 993 LHD or RHD granted you can probably get something with starship mileage and dodgy history or iffy colour or all three but that's about it. Like wise Boxster S's are very thin on the ground at that price too and again will probably be high miles cars.
Your best choices are good condition 3.2 Carrera 964 C4 or C2 or 2.7 or 2.5 Boxster plenty to be had at just below 20k with lowish miles and good spec. For modern car feel and brakes and old style 911 charm go for the 964 or save a few grand more to get into good 993 teritory. really more like 23k+ for something you will be happy owning.

I would agree with Laurence on that one. Better to have a good spec, sorted 964 (or 2.7 Boxster) than a poor 993 in a suspect colour!

I have just had a look through 911Virgin's web site, they have a number of 964s all sub £20k with some decent specs. Most decent dealers will be in the same bracket.

All 993s at 911virgin are in the mid £20k bracket. Bar one 993 LHD £21k, 1994. But you pay your money and take your chances!

I don't see why you should be put off with high milage. The main core of the engine should be untouched provided it's been well maintained and not thrashed and as long as you can track replacements of consumables, such as clutches, you should have a reasonable idea as to what is likely to need replacement over the next few years motoring. It's definately more risky, but If you've an open mind about milage i'm sure there are some cracking bargains to be had. My 944 is knocking on in terms of milage now (although it's low for it's age) and the vast majority of parts i've had to replace so far are due to things getting old rather than worn (i.e. electrical sensor insulating materials perishing, brake and fuel pipes corroding). The engine and transmission and other mechanicals are still as sweet as it was the day it was born. I would think the air cooled motor in a 993 would be even more robust due to the lack of a water cooling system.

nothing wrong with high milage per say. But cars at that sort of price will probably reflect there condition and cars of 100k+ miles might well have some or all of the following : worn suspension, worn out seats and interior parts (seat bolsters etc) engine in need of some head work in particular valve guides and piston rings(although the 993 is bullet proof it's still subject to wear and tear). Of course lower mileage cars can suffer all the above but it's less likely. A well maintained car might well have had these items sorted and kept on top off but that comes at a price and will be reflected in resale.
964's at this price will be at the top of the condition scale and will have those sort of items sorted. likewise for the other cars mentioned. Boxsters will be low miles and in generally much better shape than 100k+ car.

You might get a great 3.2 or 964 - or maybe risk an iffy 993. They're all 10 years+ so look carefully. Somehow, I can't see any really nice 911 for £20K now losing that much as long as you're happy with the car.
