Whatever happened to WUF?

..... just curious but I remember talk of it being sold 2 - 3 years ago but it doesn't appear to have been that visible since (at least to my knowledge). It was a memorable 944!

Hi Steve,

The car dropped off the radar after Ben sold it, the new owner never appeared on any of the forums to my knowledge. A shame, as it was one of the more interesting ones!

Ben logs in occasionally, but I think his 996 turbo is gone as well. Rick is still around, but Porscheless, and does come to events sometimes.

Ah well... there are lots of forums out there and many 944 friendly places.

Currently owned (at least as of September) by a bloke called Tristan from Yorkshire. Passed its MoT in June.

Sums it up in a nutshell for me. Fragmenting forums in to little "cliques" just means people can't follow all of them, the pool of knowledge and experience is diluted, and who the hell gains from that? We'd all have loved to follow Wuf's progress.

Titanic used to be the one place we could all come together as a group, learn from each other, make friends, and most importantly add to the enjoyment of owning the cars. That had to change as forums took over from mail lists, fair enough, so we had two forums where you could choose to reside. Halving the group, but still workable.

Given how many 944 owners there are in the UK, and how many of them are on t'internet all day, perhaps "lots of forums" isn't the way forward? If we end up with every forum dividing each time someone feels the need to wave their tackle around at some perceived "slight", then we could well have 500 owners, and 500 people sitting at home with their own little forum!

Given that I've battled for nearly ten years to keep this forum open to non-members, and I believe Tipec have the same policy, it's a huge insult to be told that because a few cars in Birmingham didn't include the right models, we have to divide in to groups of disgruntled ex-members. Get real, see the bigger picture, and let's just get back to being a large group with proper buying and bargaining power.

Sorry, rant over. I'm the first to support small, 944-specific events. But, if it becomes some sort of "us and them" thing then we all lose out. You don't see the other models moaning that they aren't invited to Rutland, yet we seem to see people being all dramatic about the 944s not being invited to the NEC this year. I've seen more snobbery this week over the 944s than I've ever seen from the different 911 groups. [:'(]

It's all becoming something I'd rather not be a part of, and I suspect the silent majority see it the same. [&o]

Ben came to the Le Mans classic in 2010 with our little group (mainly 944's) he had just bought WUF and when he got it home he spent a small fortune on it body refurbishment and som other stuff to get it running right.
There was a Tristan with Ben, wonder if it is the smae guy from Yorkshire who now owns it ??
Paul, chill, i agree with what you are saying about dilution of the knowledge with various forums but i believe that most 944 forum goers will frequent this and the TIPEC forum.........i do, i was also a Titanic member which was an incredibly friendly place to be, some good friends made there.

I have no idea as to what the subtext here relates...

Me too. We seemed to have a great group organising informal 944 events, but now they are moaning that 911-specific events are somehow wrong. They are leaving the Club, very vocally, yet not one has had the courteousy to pick the phone up.

It's beyond me. A simple question about a well-known 944 gets the sarcastic reply "Ah well... there are lots of forums out there and many 944 friendly places". As if the 944 forum here isn't friendly? Or, are there loads of little 944-friendly places out there you have to be "invited" to join, if you are one of their mates?

I just don't know what that was supposed to mean. [&o]

I found that to be surprising comment, as whilst there are many forums which 944 owners an participate in, none are friendlier and most are short on members with any real experience.

Then maybe you should have asked before having a "rant" (your phrase) in two lengthy posts. You're fond of saying "pick the phone up"; that works both ways. My missed calls list is empty and my email in-box is too. It certainly would have been quicker and easier to send me an email than make those two posts.

It meant precisely what it said. "There are lots of 944 friendly forums out there." The sub-text is one person can't be expected to know all of them. You don't and I am fairly certain I don't. I have never seen "WUF"'s current owner post anywhere other than that one. I have no idea of why, we never spoke on the matter.

If you don't mind me asking Glenn, is it Pistonheads? I visit here, TIPEC, 968UK and occ Pistonheads and a couple of others predominantly out with the UK. BTW - thanks for the info. Nice to hear the car is still kicking around.

Would also be interested to hear about this car, hope it's still running well.

Glenn, I have c. 500 944 Register members, and 17500 forum members. I've sent over 50 emails this week regarding Club stuff, and excluding my own personal forum use, have spent at least 2 hours a day on Club matters.

I'm not saying that to be some sort of martyr: it's a choice, I enjoy it, and that's fine. I apologise if I misunderstood your remark "Ah well... there are lots of forums out there and many 944 friendly places" as a dig, but given your very vocal criticism this week of the Club for being "only for 911 owners", and so many other criticisms from former members of the 944 Register here recently, it's fair to say I read any comments as negative ATM. Not one person has come to me personally, and that does hurt.

I can't call everyone, I'd be there all day and night. We have one Register Director, he doesn't call all the Registers: we call him if there's anything we can offer as an idea, or a criticism. If anyone has ideas to improve the 944 Register, contributions for the magazine, concerns or problems, they simply need to get in touch. This Club is supposed to work from the members upwards, not be dictated from the "top".

I have to support P-Mac here and say that whilst the remark may not have been intended to have sounded 'off', it was easily possible to take it that way. I too though that it was shirty.

Internet communication is notoriously easy to misconstrue.

No, it was a small forum operated by a group of mainly midland-based Porsche enthusiasts. I attended classic car shows with them for a couple of years but I haven't actively used that forum for many months as their interest in going to shows has waned. It took me a while to remember the URL and my login details for it.
