Whats best GT4 vs GT3

So lets open the floodgate of option from our purist driver friend - given all the drooling and salivating the frankly stunning GT4 is nearly here - So what would you have GT4 or GT3 (latest version) and why (more specific than its a real drives car, they both are....)

I'll start the ball rolling - I am leaning towards the GT4 - it looks soo good and I have a hunch will be the better fast road car.............

No idea what's 'best' - that's largely subjective - although many people rely on the motoring mags to tell them.

However, if I was in the market for either, I think I'd prefer the GT4.

I have a hunch it won't be.....

I have not driven a GT4, but have owned two Caymans and have enormous respect for that motor. I have a manual GT3 Club Sport which is a totally different car. It will be very interesting which is the more involving, which is best on track, which is best for road use, which will appreciate the most (as I feel both will!)

The GT4 will be an electrifying performer for sure but it will bear the same burden as every "other" model since the 912................its not a 911.

This has always been the case and always will be.. GT3 for the win!

In my opinion the GT 4 will be a fantastic car. Having owned two GT 3 cars I have total confidence in AP and his colleagues in the Motorsport division. Both my GT 3's have been exactly what A P said they would be and I am sure they will have done a brilliant job with the GT 4 especially as it comes with many parts from the the GT 3. They do understand what makes a car enjoyable to drive.

Which one is best is solely down to personal choice but the GT 4 looks brilliant value for money compared to any other mid engine car. The 991 GT 3 comes with all the 911 history and constant development and despite that development still has many of the characteristics of a 911 and is a joy to own and drive. The GT 4 however starts with that wonderful mid engine balance so doesn't need things like rear wheel steering. I still cant help feeling there is still much more to come from the Cayman especially if the Motorsport team were allowed to fully develop the car. Whilst 911's continue to sell in good numbers that is not going to happen though is it as it would be bad for the P & L. Will the next Porsche sports car be mid engined and sit above the 911 and look to challenge Ferrari more directly?

I drove a Cayman R round Silverstone and I thought it was a brilliant car. The GT 4 will clearly be a step on again.

The question Tom asked is purely academic as both the GT 3 and GT 4 are difficult to get but I would be tempted to buy a GT 4 if I didn't already own a GT 3. I suspect the GT 4 will be a brilliant track car. It really is like asking what is better the burgundy or the bordeaux though.

I will do a report on my GT 3 once I have done some track time in it. Initial impressions are fantastic with the gearbox, noise, turn in, and range of ability particularly good. The chasis and brakes (410mm PCCB) also a step up from last time. The Michelin Cup 2's seem more road friendly than before so will be interesting to see what they are like on track. Engine does not have quite as much character as the Mezger and steering has a fraction less feel but both darn close to before. Very thirsty beast and no umbrella holder!!

Agreed. The GT4 will no doubt be a brilliant car but if it had a high revving engine like a 'motorsport department developed' GT3 engine it could just be that tad more exhilarating (not saying it won't be exhilarating, obviously it will).

Also, 'they' told us the 991 GT3 had to be PDK in order to deliver what they wanted out of the car. Offering manual on the GT4 is fine, but manual only does seem to be a restriction on its full potential, no doubt to keep it in its place.

But other than that, I think what will be most memorable about the GT4 will be that its handling will be sublime.

Having owned the GT 3 for a few months I think they were right to put the modified PDK in this car. Unless you are superman you simply could not keep up with this engine and so you would not get the best out of this car with a manual box and something would be lost. I think this makes 991 GT 3 more" digital" but so be it. What this means is that the 997 generation of GT 3 and GT 3 RS were the best manual 911 cars that Porsche will ever build which presumably is why so many people now want to buy one.

If I were lucky enough to be buying a GT 4 I would definitely want the PCCB's (unless it was going to be tracked to death in which case I would go the Alcons route.) The 410mm discs are going to give it fantastic stopping power which combined with the superb handling will make it a great to drive on track.
