whats it worth?

Hi
I have the chance to buy a 1987 928 S4, 160,000 KM/miles? one off only colour, 2 owners from new and been in dry storage for the past 5 years.
car has not run for nearly 3 years as the owners says it users water but not sure if its a gasket or WP. I don't know if engine has been over heated.
What are the potential problems and costs that may arise for a car that has sat so long.
Im very handy with the tools so embarking on a lengthy and complex project wont be an issue.
body panels are in mint condition though it does need a paint job, interior is shabby, usual electrical gremlins, brakes and suspension will need attention as wel
Ive been looking on the net to get an idea what its worth as some cars are fetching 2k with running engines.
Is it worth the risk with a non running engine? what else should I be looking for

Regards

Impossible to give an answer on the info you have supplied, too much guessing. As an example I replaced my rad a year ago and that cost £750, and the power steering pump another £700. Tyres would be near shot if lying for 6 yrs and the electrics potentially bottemless. You really need to buy it cheap and or have a respected 928 expert do a PPI. But great cars they are so worth the effort.

As Runningman said so difficult to tell. If it has been cooked it could have compression problems due to scored bores. If the engine is shot it's pretty much a breaker I would say. If the engine is good then it's worth the effort as they are getting desirable.

Gearbox I think is from S class Merc so is pretty bullet proof but the electrics are problematic.

Mine had only been sat for 10 months with no battery but out took a long time and a lot of effort to get electrics and the HVAC especially, operating normally and I'm pretty good with the spanners. I paid £2k for a running MOT'd example with great body but needing paint. I then dropped £3,300 at Paul Anderson for stuff I never new about such as engine mounts, sump gasket, rocker gaskets, leaking oil cooler and power steering, belts and water pump etc etc. I went to Paul because of his reputation and I didn't fancy the doing the timing belts, the rest was "while it's in bit's" stuff, soon adds up!

So you can spend a lot on the mechanics before even looking at paint. Good luck and keep us posted, fantastic cars, I love mine and even got the insurance for £89!!
Cheers
Paul.

what should the cylinder compression spec be in BAR pressure on this engine?
I will be doing a compression test on it along with other tests sometime over the weekend.
I will post results and see what feed back I get, then I will make a decision whether to buy or not to buy.

Well, I checked out that 928 this morning and gladly walked away from it. I found a number of big issues with it such leaking trans, badly corroded various fluid lines, big oil leak from engine (somewhere), damaged chassis, steering geomertry not right and many other things wrong. Thanks for your advice, search continues.

Sound like a breaker sad but if its that bad and if the chassis in bent/crash damaged was it a category write off at some point ?

the impression I got from the guy was, 'it can sit there for ever' he wanted £4200 for it. It just wasn't worth it especially as it being a non runner.
As for the damaged chassis, I don't think its been crashed just who ever has worked on it in the past didn't show any care how it was jacked up.
WASTE of a car that's got potential to be a stunner.

Regards
