whats my noise?

Alpine

New member
can anyone help with this one

if I drive the car hard for say a couple of minutes, the engine tone seems to get a little rougher and there is some slight vibration coming through the accelerator pedal. After a couple of minutes of slower driving, the noise and vibration will go away.

i though maybe something to do with an engine mount (although this is a complete guess on my part), or someone said it could be a cracked manifold (with the crack opening up as the manifold gets hotter as the engine is run harder)

any thoughts would be appreciated - thanks

Hi Phil,

When my right engine mount failed the steering shaft made contact with the exhaust manifold, if this is left too long it can cause the manifold to crack. I would have a look and see how close the exhaust manifold is sitting to the steering shaft, I think mine is about 2 cm clear.

Thanks Dave

how am i best to check - can i see from the engine bay looking down or do i need to get underneath - sorry - I'm not very technical.

what are the symptoms of a failed engine mount ?

cheers

Hi Phil,

You can measure the height of the engine mount to determine if it has failed (they are hydraulic - installed height should not be less than 62mm according to the workshop manual). To check the clearance between the manifold and steering shaft just look down on the engine from directly in front of the steering wheel. Other symptoms would be quite a bit of vibration present at lowish rpm's and the gearstick may well vibrate as well.

Cheers
