What's the catch...?

Got a renewal notice from Direct Line this week and was pleasantly surprised to see my premium has come down by almost £200. However with my KW in the process of being installed i'm anticipating that the premium will be hiked significantly once I declare this mod so I gave AON a try on their 2nd car policy that includes 5 trackdays. This policy requires your car to be insured as a 2nd car with your 1st and main car being on fully comp insurance, i.e. my Focus. Well I was amazed at the quote of a little over £250!! On the face of it, it seems too good to be true as it includes:-

Unlimited milage (usually limited to 6k a year but for old cars they allow unlimited milage)
£250 excess (£1500 track excess)
Track days (though doesnt include cover for blowing engines, just you crashing into someone, someone crashing into you, or you puting it into the gravel or a concrete wall - and only on major tracks so Bedford not included yet)
fully comp type cover (i.e. theft, fire, vandalism, 3rd party, you stuffing it into a ditch)
All mods declared including KW, surpirsingly they didn't seem to care what mods I had, they simply asked are there mods fitted. I had to make sure the operator actually made a note of the mods I was declaring as he was keen to move on.

Is there a catch? Has anyone else got this type of policy. From what I can see at the moment the only thing i'm missing compared with a normal fully comp policy (apart from an extra £350 on the policy) is you don't earn any NCB as you are earning it against your 1st car. Seems too good to be true.

Probably no catch. I was with Adrian Flux for my first year and had a big claim. (I have read some negatives elsewhere, but found them to be excellent).
They were too expensive for second year, so I went with Carole Nash. Only a minor increase.
However, I wanted to do track days this year and they cannot do that unless accompanied by an instructor.

I am now with Heritage who offer a Modern Classic policy with a high mileage limit and unlimited PCGB Track Days and others with notice as standard. The policy is similar to the one you describe, with similar excess for Track Days. I retain my NCB to use on a 'main' car and carry it forward onto this one. So, I can go out and buy a 944T, etc as a daily car (But that is what my 964 is?!).
Price on my policy dropped by adding my wife onto policy. she was on with AF but not CN. She has finally had a drive of it, after 2 years! Thankfully, she did not like it, hooray!

That sounds a very good policy Scott, does it have an agreed value also?

What office did you call and what's their number?

Scott, how competitive is the cost of the 1st car compared to others?

You can have an agreed value if you want. Aparently it doesn't load your policy any more but you do have to go through some sort of formal valuation process. It was AON's 'Specialist Insurance' department on 08705 708 090. I'm not sure which office I spoke to.

Wizard, My 1st car is insured with Direct Line, they didn't ask for any details of the policy for my other car, only that it was fully comp.

I'm very suspicious i've missed something so will be checking first thing on Tuesday. I'm just suspicious that the operator chap has made some error somewhere like just typing in 944 and not 944 turbo or something daft like that.

I would certainly get an agreed valuation as cheaper insurance would be irrelivant if they paid out a low value on your vehicle should you have an accident.

Gave AON a call today and the policy does indeed check out. It was for a 944 turbo, was effectively fully comp coverage, unlimited milage, mods, 5 track days. So there you go!

I can only speak from my own personal experience but Direct Line has been very good for me for std car insurance. When I was rear ended last year by someone insured by Admiral, which is the same company, I got sterling service and a brand new C-class Merc courtesty car. Yes, they could do with emplying poeple with an IQ in double figures on their phone line!
