Hi bought a 944 today can someone tell me whats the orange/red diamond shaped light on the speedometer it flashes sometimes i am worried  please help

I am going to guess you have an oval dash post 1986 car (it would really help if you specified what you have).

There are no warning lights on the speedometer itself, but on the temp/fuel gauge to the left you have the brake pad, and handbrake warning triangles. On the oil pressure/battery gauge to the right you have the brake fluid and ABS warning triangles

Sorry lads for not giving more info on that, Its a 1986 944 lux with the oval dash and the diamond is centre of the clock

am guessing you mean at the top between speedo and rev counter. My 86 lux handbook says this:

"Central Warning Lamp
The central warning lamp is lit until the engine is started. This lamp monitors all functions shown on the instruments. Should one of these functions develop a fault, the central warning lamp comes on, accompanied by the relevant warning lamp. Both lamps remain lit until the fault has been rectified. The vehicle should be taken immediately to your nearest authorized garage."

I assume this means that you should have another lamp coming on at the same time which maybe is not working? Check what lights come on with the ignition in daylight and see if they are all working, like, for example, the brake fluid warning light. That might narrow down the problem, but others here are way, way more knowlegeable than me. enjoy your 944.

As noted previously, there are no warning lights on the Speedo' or Tach'.

On the left hand dial it could be seat belt man.

Does it come on when the ignition is switched on, and then go out?

my handbook says nothing in the speedo....

In the fuel and temp dial there's seatbelt man centre. Above him a triangle, above that brake pad warning. Below him is a triangle, then handbrake warning. Very top has warning lamp for towing....not used that one yet! [&:]

In the oil and amps dial there's a triangle at the top with brake fluid warning below it.

Failing that, could you photograph it? Or, I can scan the page of the handbook and e-mail you. I am the IT expert on this forum as well [:D][:D][:D][:D]

Go on, say yes, then we can run a sweep stake to see if he can. [;)]

Ok lads drove it today the flashing diamond is on the rev counter doesnt flash all the time though[&:] Thanks for the help

Under what circumstances does it flash - under accellaration, braking, or is it completely random? Also is it a solid diamond or does it have a symbol inside the diamond?

Where the heck did you find that Jim, and what year does it relate to? Reading the blurb it doesn't sound like a shift light per se, but more like an economy meter [&:] I've never heard of it before and I wonder if it was an option that they soon dropped?

I know, it's not really a shift light. Well it is, but one optimised for fuel economy rather than performance.

My mother used to have one on a civic. Only it was green and had "Eco" written on it. I'm very suprised that Porsche could give a monkeys about saving fuel in 1986!
