Wheel alignment and balancing

I have recently got a 996C4S and I think either the tracking or balancing may be slightly out. The tell tale signs are uneven wear accross thr tyre tread and a slight steering wheel wobble which only becomes apparent at above 60mph. Does that sound like tracking or balancing? Does this need to be sorted by a PC or are independants better equipped to tackle this? It is going in for the 50th anniversary clinic at my local PC on Saturday, so will be able to have a look at it on the ramps! thanks

Hi hope you are enjoying the experience.
I had the alignment recently done on my 996 C4S by an independant rather than OPC, they use the same equipment as OPC at a cost of £100 rather than the £200 OPC wanted[:D]. They spent around 3 hours on it and handling has improved considerably and tyre wear is even. As for the slight wobble you have it could be just balancing or at worst a bad tyre.
At the end of the day its whatever you prefer.

..... As for the slight wobble you have it could be just balancing or at worst a bad tyre......
Or worse still a buckled wheel.....

Balancing is the first step, and ask the tyre fitter to check the wheels are running true.

£100 seems like a bargain for an alignment check if its to check the geometry on all four wheels. I pay nearly double that price and I guess Centre Gravity would be charging even more. Where do you get this done for the price ?

I recently had mine done for about £80 (the same guys visit the specialists who "add" their bit on top!) Ever since I bought my car the steering wheel wasn't aligned which I eventually got used to.
My steering wheel is now in the correct position and all wheels are running true with no uneven tyre wear.

I hope mine is not a buckled wheel, I already had it inspected by PC Bolton prior to purchasing the car with the 111 point check, so I assume this would have picked that up? I will start with the balancing and then look at the tracking then. Do the PC centres use the laser alignment machines and are these any better than the manual ones that you drive on? With the 10% discount you get as an owners club member at the PC, I will see what they suggest tomorrow. I never know which independants are trustworthy and sometimes I find them equally as expensive as the PC anyway. thanks

I am in Macclesfield in Cheshire. My local PC is Wilmslow. I will get a quote at the 50th clinic tomorrow and then maybe compare to any other independants. thanks

Have you tried Mike at Sports and Classic in Knutsford? He has a very good reputation, and I believe he is reasonably priced.

thanks for the advice. Just got a quick quote, £150+ VAT with Mike, which to be fair is what I expected price wise, but that includes suspension check etc for a few hours work and then alignment with the Hunter machine. I will see how that compares to the PC. thanks everyone.
